A Commitment to Preventing Loss of Life and Property

A message from Dan W. Bailey, Director of Wildland Fire Programs for the International Code Council

In 2007, a total of nine wildland firefighters died in the line-of-duty. So far this year, 20 Wildland fire fighters have died. And it is still very early in the fire season. So far this year there have been 53,463 fires in the United States covering a total of 3,561,315 acres at an estimated cost of $956,600,00.00. Over 2,000 have been destroyed.

The International Code Council holds high the honor of these fallen fire fighters and is committed to help prevent the loss of life and property by providing education nationwide.

On July 15, the Federal Alliance for Safe Homes (FLASH) in corporation with the Code Council unveiled a nationwide Wildland fire prevention consumer campaign, “Tale of Two Houses-Wildfire.” This campaign’s aim is to educate those who live in, and in close proximity to, a designated wildland urban interface fire area. This education is comprehensive and provides a practical approach to prevention.
