Green Standard Closer to Finish Line
 
In a huge step for the green building movement‚ balloting is now complete for the new National Green Building Standard. The standard‚ a joint project of the International Code Council and the National Association of Home Builders‚ will maintain the flexibility of green building practices while providing a common national benchmark for builders‚ remodelers and developers.

Supporting Safety in San Diego
In continuation of Code Council support of the new California Codes‚ Council CEO Rick Weiland‚ Board President Steve Shapiro and Member Services SVP Mike Armstrong spoke to attendees of the California Building Officials (CALBO) 46th Annual Business Meeting in San Diego. Topics included elevating the profiles of building officials‚ an update on the status of the Community Building Code Administration Grant Act‚ and future training and certification efforts geared toward California.

Building Safety Abroad
Afghanistan Seeks National Code System
Building an environment of construction safety was foremost on the minds of an Afghan delegation of building and fire protection engineers that visited the Code Council’s headquarters in Washington‚ D.C. The 10-day visit included instruction on the International Codes and ICC/ANSI A117.1 Standard‚ and tours of local jurisdiction facilities to observe permit processing‚ site development‚ field inspections‚ and fire fighter training and prevention programs. Council Hosts Israeli Delegation

Code Council Board President Steve Shapiro welcomed a delegation from Israel’s Ministry of Industry Trade and Labor (MOITAL) and the Standards Institute of Israel (SII) to ICC Headquarters in Washington‚ D.C., this week. The Council hosted the partnership activity with the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and ASTM International. Shapiro and the Council's International Services staff later met at the ANSI offices with Israeli delegates to discuss building safety programs in the country.

Q: A mixed use building with occupancies of Groups B (Business) and S-1 (Storage, Moderate-Hazard) is to be separated into two fire areas, each one less than 12,000 sq. ft., in order to satisfy the area limitation of Table 503 and Section 508.3.3.2. Table 508.3.3 does not require a fire-resistance rating of the fire barrier that will create the two proposed fire areas. As such, is it the intent of the code to still require a fire-resistance rated separation for the purposes of Section 903.2.8?

Did you know there are now four approved methods for preventing pan overflow in drain systems? Or that the minimum air velocity in a grease hood exhaust duct has been reduced by two-thirds?
