Building Safety Week Goes to Washington
A Code Council delegation of more than 45 Board members‚ Government Relations Advisory Council and Chapter representatives‚ International Accreditation Service Board members‚ and Council staff attended more than 120 Congressional office meetings on Capitol Hill Day. Held in Washington‚ D.C.‚ during Building Safety Week, the Council’s group discussed the proposed Community Building Code Administration Grant Act that would provide $100 million per year over five years to help local governments hire‚ train and equip code officials‚ including building and fire inspectors.

Building Awareness for First Preventers
 
Building Safety Week (May 5-11)‚ an annual event since 1980‚ raises public awareness of “First Preventers‚” the code officials who ensure building safety codes are in place to save lives and protect property. As part of the Code Official Campaign‚ an initiative to raise awareness of the role code officials play in public safety‚ the Code Council provided media across the U.S. with building safety tips.

From donating code books in Idaho to hosting an exhibit booth at a Tree City USA program‚ Building Safety Week was celebrated in jurisdictions across the U.S. In Ontario‚ Canada‚ officials provided educational materials to citizens in the city of Burlington while the Ontario Building Officials Association offered tips on how to promote building safety.

Habitat for Humanity Build
The International Code Council kicked off Building Safety Week by doing some construction of its own—volunteering at a Habitat for Humanity build site. The Council also made a donation to the Habitat chapter to support its efforts to bring affordable‚ green and energy-efficient homes to Washington‚ D.C.‚ families in need.
The International Code Council Board‚ members and staff‚ along with the International Accreditation Service Board and staff‚ volunteered at a Habitat for Humanity project in Washington‚ D.C.‚ during Building Safety Week. They spent a day working on a 53-home development in northeast D.C. to bring attention to the need for affordable‚ safe and sustainable housing.

More than 110 callers participated in the second Fireside Chat held May 8 during Building Safety Week at Code Council Headquarters in Washington‚ D.C. Hosted by Council Board President Steve Shapiro‚ topics of discussion included the Council’s proposed Community Building Code Administration Grant Program and Code Official Campaign; the Governance Review and Task Force on Hearings Ad-Hoc Committees; the Council’s green building initiative; and the 2008 Annual Conference and Final Action Hearings in Minneapolis‚ Minnesota‚ later this year. Members of the Council’s Board of Directors‚ Government Relations Advisory Committee and Chapter leaders participated in the event.

During the Building Safety Week reception‚ Code Council Board President Steve Shapiro honored Ravi Shah, Director of Urban Development‚ city of Carrollton, Texas‚ and the New York City Department of Buildings (DOB)‚ represented by Deputy Commissioner of Legal Affairs and Chief Code Counsel Phyllis Arnold and Assistant Commissioner of Strategic Planning and Implementation Benjamin Jones. Shah and the NYC DOB are the first recipients of the International Code Council’s Profile Awards honoring code officials and their departments as “First Preventers.” The awards honor individuals and organizations for raising the public awareness of the work of code officials to improve public safety in the built environment.

The Code Council’s Plumbing, Mechanical and Fuel Gas (PMG) Resource Center will host an education track and the Code Council USA Pavilion during the World Toilet Summit and Expo‚ November 4-6 in Macau‚ China. New Resources for the Sunshine State
 
On October 1‚ Florida will adopt the latest Florida Building Codes developed by the Code Council. The Council helps jurisdictions and organizations transition to these new codes. Significant Changes to the 2007 Florida Building and Residential Codes are among great new resources to provide a better understanding of changes that occurred between the 2004 and 2007 editions of the Florida Codes. Q: The second floor of a two-story office building contains a mezzanine that is accessed by an open stair from the second-floor level. Adjacent to the mezzanine is a floor opening to the main entrance lobby on the first floor below. Since the mezzanine is open to the second-floor level‚ does the floor opening between the first and second floor still qualify for Exception #7 of Section 707.2 of the 2006 International Building Code?
