Midwest Earthquakes Poorly Understood
Earthquakes can happen in areas not usually associated with seismic activity and too little is known about Midwestern seismic zones like the one that rumbled to life under southern Illinois with a magnitude of 5.2. The fault zones beneath the Mississippi River Valley have produced some of the largest modern U.S. quakes east of the Rockies‚ a region covered with old buildings not built to withstand seismic activity. Well-designed structures built to the International Codes can save lives and property during an earthquake. The recent Midwest earthquakes remind us that disaster can strike anywhere.
