Code Council Creates
Sustainable Building Committee

Code Council CEO Rick Weiland (left) and Board of Directors President Steve Shapiro discuss issues during the recent meeting in Denver where Board members approved the creation of a Sustainable Building Technology Committee.

The International Code Council Board of Directors approved the creation of a Sustainable Building Technology Committee (SBTC) to support its many ongoing efforts in green‚ sustainable and safe construction. The SBTC will provide an open forum for discussion of sustainability and ensure that Code Council members and stakeholders have a key voice in the critical debate.
“I am proud that the Board continues to be proactive on green building matters and supported creating this new committee‚” said Council Board President Steve Shapiro. “From the creation of the International Energy Conservation Code‚ the most widely used energy efficiency code‚ to the continual advancement of the International Plumbing Code‚ which requires the efficient use of water‚ the Code Council has embraced and committed itself to helping communities build safe and build green.”

Full Court Press for CBCAG Act

George Wiggins (left), Director of Building and Code Enforcement/Legislative Affairs for the City of Winter Park‚ Florida‚ and a member of the Code Council’s Government Relations Advisory Committee, Code Council Board President Steve Shapiro (second from right) and CEO Rick Weiland (right) meet with Senator Mel Martinez (R-FL) to discuss the Community Building Code Administration Grant Act. Wiggins also met with the Senator’s staff earlier this year‚ during Building Safety Week‚ to request support for the proposed legislation.

Code Council representatives are converging on Washington‚ D.C.‚ to rally Congressional support for the Community Building Code Administrative Grant (CBCAG) Act. The legislation passed the House of Representatives on a voice vote and the Senate version of the bill is now being considered by the Committee on Banking‚ Housing‚ and Urban Affairs. When enacted and funded‚ the CBCAG Act will provide competitively evaluated federal grants‚ locally matched‚ to jurisdictions who seek to build-up their local building and fire code administration and enforcement capabilities.
ICC representatives are currently focusing their lobbying efforts on minority members of the Banking Committee to gain their support for the CBCAG Act. Meetings have been held on Capitol Hill with Senators Bob Bennett (R-UT) and Mel Martinez (R-FL)‚ and another is scheduled today with Senator Bob Corker (R-TN). Senator Richard Shelby (R-AL) is the ranking member on the Banking Committee, and Code Council stakeholders are encouraged to call or write his office urging his support of the CBCAG Act. To contact other members of the Banking Committee seeking their support for the legislation‚ click here.

The Code Council is continuing its efforts to build Congressional support for the Community Building Code Adminstration Grant Act. An ICC contingent consisting of CEO Rick Weiland (second from left)‚ Utah State Representative and Inspection Program Administrator for Salt Lake City Larry B. Wiley (left)‚ and Fire Chief Jim Rampton (right) of Utah’s South Davis Metro Fire Agency met with Senator Bob Bennett (D-Utah) in Washington‚ D.C.‚ last week to discuss the legislation. Lieberman Joins List of Cosponsors

Senator Joe Lieberman
Senator Joe Lieberman (I-CT) has joined the list of Congressional supporters of the CBCAG Act. Lieberman is chair of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee and serves on two subcommittees of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee. Lieberman and Senator Tim Johnson (D-SD) are cosponsors of the Senate’s version of the legislation that was introduced by Senator Mary Landrieu (D-LA). The House version of the bill‚ introduced by Representative Dennis Moore (D-KS)‚ had 24 cosponsors and recently passed on a voice vote.
