Mueller Presented Fire Service Award The ICC Fire Service Award recognizes a member who has shown outstanding service, professional abilities and leadership in the fire prevention profession. The recipient must have served as an example to all fire prevention and fire protection professionals. The 2008 Fire Service Award was presented to Chief John Mueller, Deputy State Fire Administrator for the State of New York. Mueller has served with the New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control for 30 years and was instrumental in developing the world’s first fire safety standard for cigarettes – now used in 27 states – and helped develop and implement the state’s Campus Fire Safety Program. “It’s always gratifying to be recognized by your peers, but it’s also humbling because I don't think anything I’ve ever done is deserving of this award, as there are many of you out there and many in the fire service throughout the country that are equally deserving of such awards,” said Mueller. “Anything I’ve ever done, I’ve tried to do as a team. Those of you I work with here, in the ICC arena in developing our codes and standards, and the thousands of fire service professionals back in New York that I work with, it’s always a team effort. I thank the members of the International Code Council for this prestigious award, and I accept it on behalf of all the members of the New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control who are out there every day working to make New York safe.” Mueller’s duties over the years range from fire protection planning for the Olympics, U.S. Open and Woodstock 25 Year Reunion to investigating fatal fires, managing firefighter training and mobilizing aid during the World Trade Center attack in 2001. “From his initial efforts as a rank and file firefighter to today as an executive in the State Office of Fire Prevention and Control, Chief Mueller has devoted his entire career to ensuring the public’s safety,” Awards Committee Chairman Tim Ryan said.
