Messersmith Receives Affiliate Award Jim Messersmith, Coordinating Manager of Regional Code Services for the Portland Cement Association, was presented the ICC Affiliate Award. Recipients are honored for their integrity, professionalism and dedication to professional service, especially code development and public safety. “I’d like to thank the International Code Council for presenting this award to me; it’s truly an honor to receive it,” said Messersmith. “I’ve been involved in this for many years, both in the legacy codes groups and now in the ICC arena, and there have been many individuals involved, many individuals that are still involved, that I feel are more deserving than I am of this award, but I’ll take it anyway. Thank you.” Messersmith has devoted his professional career to codes and code development – first as a code official and now as a long time representative of the Portland Cement Association. He has served on numerous Code Council and legacy committees. “Jim’s active participation in numerous committees of the Code Council, the legacy groups and other organizations illustrates his commitment to building safety,” Awards Committee Chairman Tim Ryan said.
Sun City Presented Community Service Award The Sun City, Arizona, Fire Prevention Bureau was presented the ICC Community Service Award, which recognizes meritorious service by an individual, jurisdiction or organization that promotes public health, safety and welfare. Volunteers also find the time to conduct public presentations on fire safety topics, reaching 5,000 citizens annually. “I’ve been with Sun City Fire for about three years now,” said Deputy Fire Marshal Ken Rice, “and it’s just amazing when I walk into work every day to have 18 different volunteers show up, and dedicate their time. These folks donate about 6,000 hours a year to keep everybody safe and educate the public; it’s amazing. It’s truly my honor to accept this award for them. My hat goes off to the volunteers in the bureau; they truly do make a difference in the fire and life safety community. Thank you.” “Their work is a true testament to providing a better, safer and more enjoyable level of living for the residents of Sun City,” Awards Committee Chairman Tim Ryan added.
