Building Safety Association of Vermont Achieves Code Council Chapter Status

With their first organizational goal of becoming a Professional Chapter of the International Code Council now realized, the Building Safety Association of Vermont (BSA-VT) has big plans for continued development. The last state to establish an ICC Chapter, the new ICC BSA-VT Chapter has plans to maximize communications to members and the public through a new public relations campaign, website development, and various education sessions.

The BSA-VT Chapter is unique as it is comprised of virtually every affected group—code enforcement, builders, design professionals, etc. Current chapter membership stands at 35 members, and the chapter has a new group working on a public relations campaign to grow membership.

The new chapter also plans to bring current information to those in attendance at its business meetings. March featured an informational speaker on residential fire sprinklers, April is indoor air quality, May is prefabricated truss applications, and in June, the Code Council’s Bruce Johnson will present on the International Building Code, which will be the chapter’s first official Code Council training session.

In a state where few communities have zoning or building authorities or the desire to start any, the chapter is also looking into developing a service that provides plan review and site inspections for buildings in those communities. The services would be performed by ICC-certified individuals and will not require state and local sanction or legislation.

Finally, planning started for the chapter’s first Annual Meeting, which will be held in late June or early July at the Lake Morey Resort in Fairlee, Vermont.
