A clarification to garage separation (Section R302.6 and Table R302.6) has been made to the 2009 International Residential Code (IRC). The dwelling/garage separation provisions in Sections R309.1 and R309.2 of the 2006 IRC have been relocated to Section R302 with the other fire-resistant construction provisions. For clarification, the provisions requiring the application of gypsum board on the garage side of the separation from a dwelling have been placed in a new table, and the corresponding text has been deleted from Section R309.2.
