Code Council Hosts 2nd Annual Green Building Focus Conference

The International Code Council, along with the Alabama Council and Birmingham Chapter of the American Institute of Architects, the Green Building Initiative, and the Alabama Chapters of the Associated Builders and Contractors, Inc. and the U.S. Green Building Council, hosted the 2nd Annual Green Building Focus Conference and Expo in Birmingham, Alabama. Topics during the four-day event included:

• The International Green Construction Code (IGCC)
• Private and Federal Incentives for Green Projects
• The Greening of Corporate America
• Emerging Building Regulations
• Social Media 101 & How to be a Trust Agent
• The Role of Governance in a Green Economy
• National Energy Policy and Legislation Impacting Green Building
• Successfully Managing LEED Documentation
• Green Globes, A Nationally Recognized Green Rating and Assessment System
• Strategies for Creating Healthy and Sustainable Communities
• and many more

Guest speakers included Michelle Moore, Federal Environmental Executive for the Obama Administration; Llewellyn Van Wyk, Research Group Leader for the Council for Scientific & Industrial Research in South Africa; Yalmaz Siddiqui, Director of Environmental Strategy for Office Depot; Eric Corey Freed of organicARCHITECT; and Karan Grover of KGA Architects in India.

Donald Brown, Principal of Brown Chambless Architects, gave a presentation on the IGCC entitled, "A Watershed Step Forward: What It Means to You". Brown detailed the development of Public Version 1.0 of the IGCC, and last month's Public Comment Hearings in Chicago where testimony will be used for the basis for Public Version 2.0 that is scheduled for release in November.
