IGCC Public Version 2.0 Premiers at Greenbuild "Public Version 2.0 reflects the work of the IGCC Public Hearings Committee, which conducted a review of 1,500 comments and nearly 120 hours of testimony during eight days of public hearings," ICC CEO Rick Weiland (left) said at the unveiling of the latest edition of the International Green Construction Code. "It's another step in providing tools now for jurisdictions to integrate their sustainability programs with the tested safety language of the family of International Codes." Revisions to Code Development Process Members of the ICC Code Development Review Ad Hoc Committee (CDRAC) convened a fourth meeting on November 8-9 in Chicago to continue their review of member feedback regarding the Code Council's current code development procedures. The discussions resulted in a recommendation to tighten funding restrictions for Governmental Member voting representatives and to utilize survey information to inform next steps regarding electronic voting. CSB Chair Applauds ICC Emergency Amendment to Prohibit Indoor Purging During the 2010 Annual Business Meeting in Charlotte, Code Council voting representatives ratified the Board of Director's Emergency Amendment to the fuel gas purging requirements of the 2009 International Fuel Gas and Residential Codes. U.S. Chemical Safety Board (CSB) Chairman Chairman Rafael Moure-Eraso applauded the efforts as a means to increase safety in facilities. "The CSB believes these new requirements are urgently needed to prevent future tragedies resulting from unsafe purging practices at industrial, commercial and public facilities," Moure-Eraso said. Media Gives Thumbs Up to Final Action Hearings Changes to the International Energy Conservation Code received the bulk of attention in media coverage of the 2010 Final Action Hearings in Charlotte, North Carolina. And by far the wide majority of stories were positive with headlines such as "Historic U.S. Vote to Make Buildings 30 Percent More Energy Efficient," "New National Model Energy Code Will Boost Energy Efficiency of Home, Commercial Building Construction by Historic 30 Percent Levels," "New National Energy Conservation Code for Buildings Will Boost Green Jobs" and "ACC Applauds New National Energy Conservation Code for Buildings." Global Forum Demonstrates ICC's Collaboration with International Community The Global Forum at the 2010 ICC Annual Conference contained presentations from various countries and regions that are receiving support from the Code Council on the development of codes and safety regulations. Representatives from Abu Dhabi, Egypt, Mexico, Jamaica, Japan, Canada and a coalition from the Caribbean participated in the event. ICC Encouraged by New IBHS Research Facility A new Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS) wind-testing facility—capable of subjecting whole houses to hurricane-force winds, flying embers and drenching simulated rain—became fully operational in October. An IBHS video shows two houses subjected to Category 3 hurricane-force winds. One house is built to typical Midwest code standards; that house is destroyed by the wind. The surviving house has a variety of enhanced structural details, specified by the IBHS Fortified program. The Code Council is working closely with IBHS and is encouraged about the prospect of new data being developed. Click to watch the video. |

Chapter Merit Awards were presented to the Cumberland Region Codes Association in Tennessee, the Laney College Chapter, the Sacramento Valley Association of Building Officials, and the Virginia Building Code Officials Association.
