ICC Announces Global, Fire Service Membership Council Governing Committees; Enrollment Open for All Five Councils
The Code Council Board of Directors recently approved five discipline-specific Membership Councils to enhance Members' work performance, careers and professions within ICC and industry-wide, and to advocate on behalf of concerns and issues that are of particular interest to each Council.
Building Official and Assistant Director of Planning and Community Development for Norfolk, Virginia, Lynn Underwood brings professional experiences that have taken him to Afghanistan, El Salvador, Libya and throughout the United States to his new role as ICC Global Membership Council Chair.
The International Fire Code Council (IFCC) is now the Fire Service Membership Council chaired by Fulton Cochran, Henderson, Nevada, Deputy Fire Marshal. Since 2004, the IFCC has represented fire service interests related to codes and safety.
The five Membership Councils are currently open for enrollment to all ICC Members: Building Official; PMG Official; Sustainability; Global; and Fire Service.

  Board Names Codes & Standards Council;
CAC Appointments Expected This Month
The Code Council Board of Directors has appointed the Codes & Standards Council to review and approve new codes and standards projects, advise the ICC Board regarding committee appointments, and review code development policies and procedures. At its July meeting, the Board is expected to appoint four Code Action Committees (CACs). The CACs will meet this fall in support of the Group A code change deadline of January 3, 2012, for the International Building, Plumbing, Mechanical and Fuel Gas Codes. With the completion of the 2011 Code Development Hearings for the International Green Construction Code and the International Swimming Pool and Spa Code in May, the upcoming Report of Hearings also will include a notification of a Call for Committee to receive applications for the 2012/2013 IgCC and ISPSC Code Development Committees. The application deadline will be August 1.

Green Construction Industry
Since half of the world's building construction will take place in China by 2015, Code Council CEO Richard P. Weiland seized an exciting international opportunity to address a diverse audience of decision makers on China's booming construction industry and its critical need for green buildings, green building products and services. Weiland delivered a presentation on the "International Green Construction Code: Game Changer in Sustainable Building" during China's premier green design and construction conference, Global Green Building. Safe Rooms, Shelters Encouraged during Alabama's Rebuilding Process

ICC participated in the Safer Alabama Summit along with FEMA, the National Storm Shelter Association, architects and contractors. As Alabama begins rebuilding following April's devastating tornadoes, federal and state officials are encouraging the use of storm shelters and safe rooms as tools to mitigate future disasters. Tuscaloosa's Boswell: Some Good Coming from the Bad

While Tuscaloosa, Alabama, an ICC Governmental Member, continues to recover from a devastating EF-4 tornado that struck the city April 27, local officials are already eyeing the future and the city's rebuilding process. IgCC Gains Momentum
throughout the U.S.

Green building is becoming the new standard for environmentally and safety conscious U.S. cities and states, as more jurisdictions use the new International Green Construction Code (IgCC) to address safe and sustainable construction for new and existing buildings. Boynton Beach, Florida, and Phoenix are the most recent in a series of local and state governments to adopt the IgCC.


Working Together across the Border

The Building Officials' Association of British Columbia (BOABC) continues to expand around existing and new examinations, based on the current National Building Code of Canada and the British Columbia Building Codes. The exam development partnership between ICC and BOABC has resulted in a record number of certifications being issued to inspectors and leads the way for national certification and uniform training recognized throughout Canada. U.S. CSB Recognizes ICC for Its Continued Efforts in Health, Safety

The U.S. Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board (CSB) has issued a statement thanking the Code Council for its passage and ratification of the Emergency Amendment to the International Fuel Gas Code and the International Residential Code. The emergency amendment addressed issues resulting from the natural gas explosion at a facility in Garner, North Carolina, in June 2009 (photo at left).
