Membership Council Leaders
Planning for the Future

Chairs, Vice Chairs and staff liaisons of the new ICC Membership Councils met recently to discuss plans for the first meetings of the full Councils at ICC's 2011 Annual Conference in Phoenix. ICC, TFRI Agreement Will Advance Public Safety in China

ICC and the Tianjin Fire Research Institute (TFRI) have agreed to work cooperatively to improve Chinese construction codes. The two organizations plan to exchange technical information and address topics in the International Building and Fire Codes, including safe evacuation and fire protection. ICC CEO Richard P. Two New Codes, Professional Development Opportunities Highlight 2011 Conference

Annual Conference Banquet

The keynote speaker for this year's Annual Banquet will be U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Administrator Craig Fugate; a renowned leader in emergency management and preparedness. Administrator Fugate will address the critical role of building and fire officials as part of the emergency management team, and the importance of codes in disaster mitigation.


Standards Campaign Gives U.S. Companies a Competitive Edge

The Code Council along with the American National Standards Institute and 24 other partners across the standardization community have launched Standards Boost Business, an outreach initiative to help corporate America harness the power of standards and conformance to boost business performance and gain a foothold over the global competition.


Resolving the Growing Problem of Wildland/Urban Interface Fire

Three years ago, the Code Council, in collaboration with more than 40 national groups and organizations spearheaded an effort to form the National Wildland Urban Interface Council (NWUIC). Today, the group continues to work to resolve the growing problem of wildland/urban interface fire in America.

 


  IFIA Executive Director Emeritus Earns Fire & Life Safety Award
Former Illinois Fire Inspectors Association (IFIA) Executive Director Emeritus George Michehl has been named the recipient of the 2011 Excellence in Fire & Life Safety Award sponsored by the International Code Council and the Fire & Life Safety Section of the International Association of Fire Chiefs. The award honors those who have dedicated themselves to saving lives and property through the development of codes, fire-prevention practices and leadership techniques. Michehl will be presented the award August 26 at the Georgia World Congress Center during the Fire-Rescue International conference in Atlanta. Click to continue.

  New Legislation on Affordability of Insurance Specifies Use of the I-Codes
New legislation introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives by Florida Rep. Frederica Wilson, to assure that insurance is available to homeowners, specifies that for states to be eligible for mitigation programs they must have building codes "consistent with International Code Council codes."

  Code of Honor Online Application Database Now Open
The online application database for the Phoenix Final Action Hearings opened Aug. 8 and will close Monday, Aug. 29, at 5 p.m. EST. Applicants may apply for the scholarship in a variety of categories; however, all Code of Honor scholars must be a Governmental Member Voting Representative in good standing with the Code Council.
 
 
 

  President Obama Nominates Ryan to Serve on NIBS Board
President Obama has nominated former Code Council Board of Directors member James T. "Tim" Ryan to serve on the National Institute of Building Sciences (NIBS) Board of Directors. Ryan was one of six intended appointees announced by the White House last month. Ryan currently services as Secretary of the NIBS Board. A Certified Building Official, he was elected to the Board in 2006 as a local agency official, a non-presidential appointee in the public interest category. Click to continue.
 

  Federal Grant Opportunities Available for Member Jurisdictions
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development released the Sustainable Communities Regional Planning Grant and the Community Challenge Planning Grant Program to offer assistance to jurisdictions in expanding their communities in a safe and sustainable manner. The deadlines for application submissions are August 25 and September 9, respectively.
