This Week's Featured Sponsors — NCHH and PERC
The National Center for Healthy Housing (NCHH) is a proud sponsor of Building Safety Month 2011. NCHH's mission is to protect children from health and safety hazards in their homes through practical and proven steps. NCHH conducts applied research, training and policy advocacy. NCHH operates the National Healthy Homes Training Center and Network with funding from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The Training Center provides a wide array of training courses through its network of 34 partners across the country. Code inspectors, housing professionals, first responders, and others who regularly visit homes will find value in the training. NCHH and its partner the National Environmental Health Association also offer the Healthy Homes Specialist Credential for those who like a special designation to reflect their knowledge of healthy homes issues. With funding from The Kresge Foundation, NCHH launched and chairs the National Safe & Healthy Housing Coalition, which advocates for healthy housing policies and codes at the national level. The International Code Council serves on the Coalition's Steering Committee. Keep abreast of important health and safety policy issues by joining the Coalition (membership is free).

"NCHH believes that building officials play a critical role in keeping families safe and healthy in their homes and is pleased to sponsor Building Safety Month as a means for getting its healthy homes message out broadly."

The Propane Education & Research Council (PERC) was authorized by the U.S. Congress in 1996. Through its research and development, safety, and training initiatives, PERC promotes the safe, effective use of odorized propane gas as a preferred energy source. The safety of propane customers is a top priority of PERC and the propane industry. Building Safety Month represents an excellent opportunity for PERC to talk with consumers, builders, and other stakeholders about how propane, propane appliances, and propane technologies can be safely installed and used to enhance families' quality of life. For Building Safety Month, PERC will focus on the many propane-fueled outdoor living appliances such as grills, lighting, and generators that help to make outdoor living for families safe and enjoyable. Two Winning Technologies for Heat and Power Generation
Recently, the Environmental Protection Agency awarded the 2011 Energy Star Emerging Technology Award to two companies that manufacture combined heat and power (CHP) systems for home use. Residential CHPs—also called micro CHPs—are combination systems that can heat a home while simultaneously producing electricity, which can be consumed on site or sold to the local utility company. While CHPs have been successfully used in larger applications for many years, microCHP systems have only recently been commercialized in the United States. Read more.
