On April 28 at the ICC Code Development hearings in Dallas, several veterans of the code enforcement and development community met for a first in ICC history—a mentoring event.
Those serving as mentors included the following: Lawrence Crow, Development Coordinator with Irving, Texas; Shirley Ellis, Energy Code Specialist with Texas A&M University; Dwayne Garriss, Georgia State Fire Marshal and current ICC Board of Director's member; Christina Jamison, Fire Marshal for San Ramon Valley Fire Protection District; Wayne Jewell, with Green Oak Township and ICC Code Hearings Moderator; Bruce Johnson, ICC's Director of Fire Service Activities/Government Relations; Stephen Jones, Construction Official for Millburn Township, NJ and current ICC Board of Director's Secretary/Treasurer; Vickie Lovell, President of InterCode Incorporated; Sharon Myers, Master Plans Examiner for the State of Ohio; Ron Piester, Director of Code Enforcement and Administration for New York's Department of State and current ICC Board of Director's Vice President; Tina Rakes, Code Administrator for Baldwin City, Kansas and current ICC Board of Director's member; Jon Roberts, Building Division Chief, Oklahoma's State Fire Marshal's office; Maureen Traxler, Manager of Codes for the City of Seattle, Washington; Anne vonWeller, Past President of ICC; and Sara Yerkes, Senior Vice President of ICC.
Attendees were able to participate in a roundtable discussion with the mentors asking questions about their experiences in code enforcement. Some of the discussions included the following subjects: how members got started in code enforcement; challenges being faced at the local level and strategies to overcome those challenges; best practices on customer service; the importance of continuing education and professional credentialing; how to engage new participants in the ICC code development process; and the importance of creating collations and working collaboratively amongst disciplines (building, fire, PMG).
The event was open to all ICC members in attendance at the hearings. Look for this event to be offered again at the ICC Annual Conference in Portland, Oregon. The event was sponsored by the Women in Code Enforcement and Development (WICED) Chapter of ICC. |
