Government and Industry Officials Advocate for the Adoption and Enforcement of Building Codes At a U.S. House of Representatives hearing, government and industry officials testified about the importance of the adoption and enforcement of building codes developed through consensus processes, such as the Code Council's International Codes. The hearing held by a Congressional subcommittee was in support of H.R. 2069, the Safe Building Code Incentive Act. The legislation aims to provide states with additional disaster relief funding in exchange for adopting and enforcing updated building codes. Those testifying before the committee included David Miller (pictured left), Associate Administrator of the Federal Insurance and Mitigation Administration. |

Maryland State Fire Marshal Recipient of 2012 Bringing Safety Home Award The Home Fire Sprinkler Coalition (HFSC) and the National Fire Protection Association's Fire Sprinkler Initiative announced that William Barnard, Maryland State Fire Marshal, is the recipient of the 2012 Bringing Safety Home Award. The two nonprofits join forces to recognize the efforts of fire chiefs who use HFSC's educational materials and the resources of the Fire Sprinkler Initiative to ensure that decision makers have accurate information as new or updated residential fire sprinkler codes are considered. Ft. Lauderdale Announced as Site for 2014 ICC Annual Conference The "Venice of America," Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, will be the host city for the Code Council's 2014 Annual Conference and Group C Final Actions Hearings. The city earned the Venice nickname because of its 185 miles of canal waterways and is home to the International Swimming Hall of Fame and known as a major manufacturing and maintenance center for yachts. The city got its name from a series of forts built by the United States during the Second Seminole War. The 2010 Florida Codes are based on the 2009 I-Codes. New Book Connects Structural and Fire Protection Engineering to Construct Safer Buildings A new publication for the structural design of fire-resistant buildings combines the disciplines of structural engineering and fire protection engineering to offer a screening tool that can assess fire as a structural load and how it may impact structures. Structural Fire Loads: Theory and Principles, just released by the International Code Council and McGraw-Hill Professional, is written for structural and fire protection engineers, architects, educators, researchers and building officials who will benefit from the book's practical design examples presented in a step-by-step computational format. The text details slow, medium, fast, and ultra-fast fire growth, and simplifies complex and comprehensive computer analysis of fire loads. |

National Building Museum Hosting Designing for Disaster Exhibit | ||
Code Council CEO Rick Weiland and ICC's Government Relations staff met with Chase Rynd and Kate Haw of the National Building Museum, America's leading cultural institution devoted to the history and impact of the built environment. The NBM is preparing an exhibit on Designing for Disaster that will examine disaster mitigation and highlight the tools and strategies that today's planners, architects, engineers, designers, businesses and community leaders are researching and adopting to construct more durable buildings and communities. At the meeting, it was discussed how codes play a pivotal role in these efforts. | ||
