Southern Nevada Chapter Gives Ringing Endorsement of ICC's High School Technical Training Program

The Southern Nevada Chapter of International Code Council (SNICC) announced the implementation of the ICC’s High School Technical Training program at the Clark County School District East Career and Technical Academy.

SNICC board members approved a grant to pay for the school’s ICC membership and 14 student International Residential Code (IRC) books for the East Career and Technical Academy. This membership entitles the school to purchase code books at a special discounted price, study guides, and all other products at member discounts. ICC High School Technical Training Program will introduce the IRC as the adopted construction standard for Nevada and the local building departments in Clark County.

ICC, thru its member Jim Ellwood, provided samples of the instruction materials and helped guide the group through the process to implement the program. This program, successfully piloted in Maryland, centers on the IRC with the construction field technical programs. Graduates of the program will have the opportunity to earn an ICC Certificate of Achievement demonstrating code proficiency and knowledge. It is estimated that this program will be offered for the 130 students currently enrolled in construction-related courses for the 2012 school year. SNICC will also assist in providing guest speakers and support as needed.

The Technical Academy Construction Trades Coordinator David McElwain discussed the possibility of expanding the High School Technical Training program to the other three schools in the Clark County School District. McElwain also indicated that the State of Nevada is attempting to standardize the curriculum offered to the skilled trades programs and believes that this program provides the students with the best chance to be prepared for employment in the construction related trades and/or code enforcement throughout the State of Nevada, stating, “The introduction of this program came at the perfect time since we are currently rewriting the curriculum for the construction technical programs.”
