IgCC Commentary Is a Must-Have Reference for Code Officials, Architects, Engineers, Designers, Builders

Thanks to the recently released International Green Construction Code and Commentary, it just got even easier for building officials, architects, engineers, designers and builders to be code compliant and "green." The comprehensive, yet concise, summary of each section of the code provides a convenient reference for inspection, design and construction.

The 251-page publication, developed by the International Code Council, includes the code and commentary to provide insight, comments and history relating to building construction under the 2012 International Green Construction Code (IgCC).

"Readers will better understand the intent of the code and how to apply the code effectively," said Dave Walls Executive Director of ICC Sustainability Programs. "The commentary is an excellent resource of information that will assist code officials, designers and builders in the application of the 2012 IgCC. It will benefit users of the IgCC significantly in their understanding and implementation of the code's provisions."

The new publication combines the complete text of the IgCC, including tables and figures, with expert commentary immediately following each code section that provide recommendations for methods of compliance. Illustrations, reference lists, information sources and bibliographies are also included.

Recommendations suggest the most effective method of application, as well as the consequences of not adhering to the code. Illustrations provide helpful insights, as they do not necessarily illustrate the only methods of achieving code compliance.

Readers will find thorough coverage of many issues likely to be dealt with when using the IgCC. Each section's narrative includes a statement of its objective and intent, and usually includes a discussion about the need for the requirement.

Code text and commentary text are easily distinguished: All code text is shown as it appears in the IgCC, and all commentary is indented below the code text and begins with a special symbol to identify it. All code figures and tables are reproduced as they appear in the IgCC. Commentary figures and tables are identified in the text by the word "Commentary," and each has a full border.

The Commentary is a must for those who are serious about effectively designing, constructing and regulating buildings and structures. They will find it a reliable data source and reference for almost all components of the built environment.

The Commentary is to be used in conjunction with the IgCC and not as a substitute for the code. The Commentary is advisory only; the code official having jurisdictional authority has the authority and responsibility for interpreting the code.
