ICC CEO Richard P. Weiland Headlines Heart of America Chapter ABM
International Code Council Chief Executive Officer Richard P. Weiland headlined ICC officials speaking to the resurging Heart of America Chapter at its recent annual business meeting in Manhattan, Kan.

“Your President (Bud Lett) and your officers should be congratulated on the outstanding work they have done to energize this Chapter and to generate such a great turnout for your annual meeting,” Weiland told the full house of building officials gathered for the three-day conference. Lett, who introduced Weiland at the general session of membership meeting, said the HOA Chapter had its best attendance from members in recent history.

In his remarks, Weiland talked about the contribution code officials make each year in code hearings and in making the built environment safer and better. Weiland encouraged the HOA members to join and participate in the Group A Code Development Hearings in Dallas (April 29-May 8) and in any of the ICC Membership Councils, particularly the Building Official Membership Council, to exchange ideas about code issues.

Weiland discussed the work that’s been done so far on the cdp ACCESS (ACCESS – Expanding Code Development Participation) project. Formerly known as “remote participation,” cdp ACCESS seeks to give code officials the opportunity to have a voice and a vote online in future code development hearings if their physical attendance is prevented by workload or budgetary challenges. Weiland said a great deal of research and work is being invested in the project to make sure it is the right fit for conducting code hearings without sacrificing quality and transparency.

Tina Rakes, ICC Board Liaison, also addressed the HOA Chapter on the cdp ACCESS project and other issues involved with Chapter members and ICC. She said she is interested in getting feedback from the membership and other ICC Chapters about the project and its goals. She said many members are waiting to know more about the final form of the cdp ACCESS program before they can comment on it.

HOA Chapter members also heard presentations from Doug Sucik, Program Manager and Test Develper for ICC’s Certification and Testing Office, and Rick Hauffe, Regional Manager in ICC Government Relations..
