Ohio Design Professionals and Code Analysts Chapter
Unveil Codes & Standards Library

For nearly twenty years, the Ohio Design Professionals and Code Analysts have donated over $15,000 to the Columbus Metropolitan Library (CML) and its Science, Business and News division for the establishment of a codes and standards library. A need was found to have a central location where all Ohio professionals in the building industry could access the numerous codes and referenced standards cited by the Ohio Building Code and the Ohio Board of Building Standards. The Main Library of the CML already had many standards particularly those that most practitioners and building departments would not have or could not afford to have in their offices, e.g. ASTM, UL, ANSI, and NFPA. Through the resources of the ODPCA educational programs, funding has been provided to the library to purchase and maintain nearly all of the standards listed in the Reference Standards section of each new version of recent building codes. As the 2011 edition of the OBC became effective this year, ODPCA donated $5,200 to ensure that the code library was updated as well and located in one central location in the Main Library.

In addition, in 2012 through the efforts of Jim Stocksdale with COCOA, and Regina Hanshaw with the Ohio Board of Building Standards, a significant contribution of printed standards to the library, including Ohio Codes, the International Codes, ASHRAE and NFPA standards, was made.

We encourage everyone to use the printed resources at the Main Library in the Science, Business and News division located on the third floor. In addition, all resources may be accessed on-line. Click on this link for information on how to access the codes, copyright issues and costs for printing portions of any code or standard. ODPCA is proud to continue this valuable service to all design and code professionals and we hope you find it a valuable tool in your work. If you have any questions or have any suggestions, please contact David Hughes at dcharchitect@sbcglobal.net.

East Bay Chapter Donates $1,000 for Scholarships to Laney College Students

The East Bay Chapter of ICC, with a diverse membership of code officials and industry representatives, is dedicated to promoting a safe built environment through education, code development, and consistent interpretation and application of building codes, standards and policies. The Chapter's membership is comprised of building officials, private sector consultants and professionals from various construction industries in the East Bay, and the purpose of the chapter is to bring together building officials and the industry to exchange ideas and improve on industry standards.

To this end, the The East Bay Chapter has donated $1,000 for scholarships to Laney College students. Additionally, West Coast Consultants (WC3) has matched the funds of the East Bay Chapter, thus providing two thousand dollars for student scholarships.

Chapter President Harry Attri has recommended four students from his building code class to the Laney College Dean to receive $500 each. The East Bay Chapter authorized Attri to select the candidates to receive the scholarships. This approach not only helps the students, but it also encourages students to choose building inspection as a profession.

The scholarship recipients will attend the Chapter's Annual Officer Installation Dinner next month to observe what the Chapter does and to get a chance to network with industry professionals.

Additionally, the Chapter is compiling a list of the courses that are offered at Laney College on the East Bay Chapter's website, which will allow cities to send their inspectors or potential inspectors to Laney College to brush up their skills.
