Starved of Credit, Construction Suppliers Lag Housing Rebound

U.S. homebuilders have booked higher orders for seven consecutive quarters, but a shortage of building supplies means construction is lagging demand. A wider housing market recovery has yet to filter down to regional building products makers — the companies that supply the roofing, walls and interior fittings needed to build these new homes. They are operating in a much tighter credit market, and with workforces pruned during the recession triggered by the housing market crash in 2007. Analysts say the long road to recovery has already been priced into the shares of these companies, some of which could be overpriced having ridden the coat-tails of the wider housing market rebound. Construction and Technology Are Bright Spots for California's Economy
Construction jobs were showing healthy gains as more apartment-building projects and single-family homes were being built. The New Zealand employment market is fizzing again with the number of vacancies advertised in the quarter to June up 11 percent on a year ago, according to an analysis of almost 50,000 roles listed. $1.1 Million Department of Labor Grant Renews Tacoma Goodwill's YouthBuild Program
Tacoma Goodwill has been selected by the U.S. Dept. of Labor as one of 68 job training and placement programs nationwide to receive multi-year funding for the "YouthBuild" construction trade and career path program. The $1.1 million DOL grant covers operations through June 2016, providing 66 at-risk youth per year with trade and life skills necessary for economic self-sufficiency. Read more
Industry Leaders Say Thousands of North-East Construction Jobs at Risk
Thousands of North-East construction jobs could be at risk unless the government gives companies a fairer chance to win public sector work, industry leaders have warned. The warning comes after a National Federation of Builders study revealed about 40 percent of small and medium-sized construction firms are failing to win 90 percent of public sector contracts. The Employment Situation for June – Food for Thought
Total payrolls expanded by 195,000, with the private sector adding 202,000 and government subtracting 7,000. The previous two months were revised up by a total of 70,000. Homebuilding payrolls expanded by 5,200. The unemployment rate was unchanged at 7.6 percent. The labor force expanded by 177,000 and the number of persons employ grew by 160,000. Read more
U.S. Construction Jobs Highest Since 2008
The number of unemployed workers with construction experience has fallen to low enough levels that firms in a growing number of locations and segments are having trouble finding people with the needed skills. Contractors have filled the gap so far by adding to workers hours but this solution may be reaching its limit. Read more
AFL-CIO Housing Investment Trust Support for Green Jobs Passes $1 Billion
The AFL-CIO Housing Investment Trust announced that it has invested more than $1 billion to date in environmentally sustainable development and energy-saving rehabilitation work through its Green Jobs Initiative. Investments by the HIT and its subsidiary, Building America CDE, have generated over 13,600 jobs for union construction workers while helping to make the environment cleaner, healthier, and more resource-efficient.
