William Gee to Receive New Jersey's Top Fire Prevention Award

William Gee, deputy marshal for the Ocean County, N.J., Fire Marshal's office, was named fire prevention officer of the year by the New Jersey Fire Prevention and Protection Association. A Stafford Township resident and former Beach Haven Volunteer Fire Co. chief, Gee will receive the award with last year's honoree, Heidi Michel, Stafford Township fire official, whose award ceremony was cancelled due to Superstorm Sandy.

Daniel P. Mulligan, Ocean County fire marshal, said he nominated Gee for his proactive work in promoting home fire safety, especially among the senior population, who may have difficulty getting out of a burning building. Mulligan said his office is responsible for local fire code enforcement for all Long Beach Island municipalities along with Lakewood, Bay Head, Seaside Park, Point Pleasant Borough, South Toms River and Plumsted Township. Duties in these municipalities include fire inspections of commercial establishments, enforcement of state fire codes and investigation of fires. In addition, the office is responsible for inspecting all county-owned buildings.

Mayor Appoints New Milford Building Official

New Milford, Conn., Mayor Ben Blake announced that, along with his current responsibilities as director of permitting and land use, Joseph Griffith has been appointed the new role as Milford's building official.

As a licensed architect and building inspector who was the director of code compliance at UCONN before coming to Milford three months ago, Griffith brings a wealth of background and experience to Milford. Griffith is now charged with hands-on oversight within the building department, including the scheduling of inspections, the issuance of building permits, and the approval of certificates of occupancy. This realignment of responsibilities within the department is targeted to decrease wait times for building inspections and plan reviews while bolstering communications to the applicant.

"I enjoy working with our team of building inspectors," Griffith stated, "and I look forward to introducing new efficiencies and at the same time, improving customer service and consistency."
