Snowmass Village, Colo., Adopts IECC, IgCC

Snowmass Village, Colo., is being recognized as an early adopter of the newest codes that most aggressively seek to elevate energy efficiency and green construction. Only a handful of other municipalities in Colorado have adopted either of the 2012 codes: the International Energy Conservation Code (IECC), and the other and broader International Green Construction Code (IgCC).

Motivating Snowmass is awareness of greenhouse gases caused by buildings. A 2009 inventory identified energy use in buildings and snowmelt as the community's third-highest source of greenhouse gas emissions. Ground transportation was first, followed by air travel. Snowmass laid the groundwork months in advance of adoption. It formed a committee of local citizens and building industry professionals, plus two independent consultants, who spent months reviewing every aspect of the codes. Continue reading story

Robbie Robertson Remembered as "Treasure Trove of the Fire Service Industry"

"He was a treasure trove of fire service history." That description is being heard repeatedly this week as the fire service remembers an icon and champion of fire prevention—James C. "Robbie" Robertson. Robertson passed away Saturday, Nov. 9 in Virginia. He was 84.

Through the years, he wore a number of hats as he traveled across the country and Canada promoting fire codes, fire prevention, research and education. His interest in the fire service started in Asheville, N.C., where as a teen he was allowed to stay at the station. While he was permitted to ride along on calls with the assistant chief, the firefighters thought it was too dangerous for him to slide down the pole. Continue reading story

Moultrie (Ga.) Fire Prevention Division Receives 100-Percent Certification

All three members of the Moultrie Fire Department's Fire Prevention Division have earned professional certification from the International Code Council (ICC). Through rigorous testing, ICC certification ensures that staff members have demonstrated competency in the requirements of the International Codes, a complete set of comprehensive, coordinated codes used in most U.S. communities and many global markets to construct safe, sustainable, affordable and resilient structures, according to a press release from the ICC.

The Moultrie Fire Department's Fire Prevention Division — Division Capt. Lavon Cooper, Lieutenant Fire Inspector Justin Cox and Fire Inspector Cruz Chambless — earned the 100 percent designation through the Get Everyone Certified Challenge presented by the ICC and Target, which announced plans in 2010 to give $1 billion for education by the end of the 2015 fiscal year.

"ICC certifications demonstrate a professional commitment to public safety, diverse knowledge of construction safety codes and a high level of self-initiative," said Moultrie Fire Chief Ken Hannon. "Being professionally certified by the Code Council provides a nationally recognized credential that will only enhance the services provided to citizens of Moultrie." Continue reading story
