2012's Construction Rebound: Behind the Facade
Forbes' Trulia Chief Economist Jed Kolko discusses why new home construction starts in 2012 were still way below long-term normal levels despite having reached their highest level since 2008. The Census reported that there were 780,000 new housing starts in 2012, a 28-percent increase over 2011, and Raleigh, Austin and Houston led the U.S. in construction activity. The Census also reported that the seasonally adjusted annualized rate for December was 954,000. However, construction activity is still far below normal levels in most of the country.
