ICC™—SMARTreview™ Fire Safety App Provides Building Code Compliance Technology On iPhone and iPad Platforms

The ICC™-SMARTreview™ Fire Safety mobile app filters and retrieves fire-resistance rating requirements applied to all Occupancy Groups and Construction Types, and performs calculations for allowable area, area increases and mixed-area ratio for buildings with multiple occupancies, as addressed in the 2009 International Building Code® (IBC®). An intuitive, easy-to-use interface provides the following functions:

Fire Safety Requirements. The software filters fire safety data from the 2009 IBC by occupancy classification and construction type to determine: building size/type of construction, including allowable heights and areas; exterior protection, including exterior walls, roof construction and roof coverings; interior protection, including wall, floor and structural frame protection; shaft enclosures; interior wall and ceiling finishes; separated occupancies in mixed-occupancy buildings; exterior wall openings/fire separation distance; automatic sprinkler systems; fire alarm systems; and special height and area allowances.

A series of notes referencing 2009 IBC code sections are provided, as applicable to the occupancy group and construction type under design and review. Twenty-six occupancy groups and nine construction types leads to over 250 options that are available to plans examiners, inspectors and designers for selection.

Area Increase Calculator. This calculator allows the user to quickly calculate the allowable area per story for a selected single occupancy and construction type. The user enters information so that area increases are accounted for as a result of sprinkler selection and frontage accessible by emergency vehicles.

Mixed Area Ratio Calculator. This calculator allows the user to quickly calculate the mixed area ratio for a building that has separated occupancies. The user enters in the type of construction for the building and separated occupancies for each story in the building. The mixed area ratios per story, and overall mixed area ratio are calculated dynamically as information is input.

The set of calculations is sufficient to determine whether a building of a particular occupancy classification, construction type, associated fire-resistance ratings and size can be built in compliance with these provisions of the 2009 IBC. The functionality is of value to building and fire code officials, architects, designers, consultants, project managers and building owners.

ICC Expands Online Download Offerings with CSA Group Standards

For easy access and application for codes and standards users, the International Code Council (ICC) is collaborating with key standards developers and organizations, such as CSA Group (CSA), to make the vast array of construction industry safety standards referenced in the 2012 International Codes available to the building industry on the ICC website.

"In today's mobile environment, building officials and other building safety professionals demand information anytime, anywhere—including access to relevant industry standards," said ICC Chief Executive Officer, Dominic Sims. "We're pleased to add CSA Group's extensive portfolio to our growing digital standards library."

More than 150 CSA Group publications are being added to the ICC digital standards library, including:

• ASME A112.19.1
• ASME A112.19.2
• ASME A112.19.3
• CSA B64
• CSA B137

To download these or other CSA Group standards, visit the ICC website.

ICC will continue to expand its developer network throughout 2013 to meet the needs of building professionals.
