New Legislation Helps U.S. Veterans with Employment
A measure letting Iraq and Afghanistan veterans use their military experience to get construction trades jobs in the city was signed into law April 2 by Mayor Bloomberg. The bill, which the New York City Council passed last month, lets vets use their time overseas doing similar work to qualify for licenses as plumbers and electricians. Certain construction jobs also are included. Many veterans struggle to find work when they leave the military. Post-9/11 vets face an 11.7 percent unemployment rate, compared with 7.9 percent for the population at large. Many veterans have found the experience and expertise they acquired in a combat zone isn't considered by employers as they search for jobs back home. Continue reading story |
