Meet the cdpACCESS Team

The ICC Board and cdpACCESS Steering Committee are working with design and development professionals to build cdpACCESS, the new online platform for code change submittals, collaboration, and voting.

To make cdpACCESS as user-friendly as possible, the Board and Steering Committee looked to design research and user experience experts Karen Faith and Nick Hahn. The duo has been travelling the country, meeting with the ICC community and connecting with future cdpACCESS users. Their research efforts have included observations, interviews, and meetings with code development stakeholders and ICC leadership.

They've also had coffee with plans examiners, attended EduCode's Mardi Gras-themed student appreciation party, and rode shotgun with a fire code official, thoroughly immersing themselves in the world of code development. "We respect the integrity and passion with which great codes are created," said Nick. "To successfully translate what we have and will learn into the digital realm, we must have a complete understanding of the values and needs of everyone involved in a code's creation."

Nick and Karen lead a team of researchers, designers, and writers from Design Cloud, an interactive design studio in Chicago. The team is fully engaged in the creation of the new online tool code development participants will use to develop future editions of the I-Codes. They are also building a new home for cdpACCESS on the ICC website that will feature up-to-date information to keep participants informed every step the way.

To build the robust online application, ICC has enlisted Caxy, a custom web development team. As part of the cdpACCESS team, and neighbors in Chicago's West Loop, Caxy and Design Cloud often collaborate in person on the build in progress. Michael LaVista, cdpACCESS System Architect and Caxy CEO says, "We are excited to be working on a new, online system that will bring ICC's time-tested process to even more people. We're even more excited that we are using technology to do things with the code development process that weren't possible before." Peter Hernandez, Caxy's senior project manager, adds, "I feel privileged to be working with such a great team on this project."

Several cdpACCESS team members will host an information table at the Committee Action Hearings in Dallas to offer a sneak peak at the progress that has been made, share an inside look at system features and some initial prototypes, and continue to gather feedback from ICC Members and other code development process participants. Please stop by and meet the team. Comments can also be sent by email to cdpACCESS@iccsafe.org.

International Code Council Members and other building safety professionals will gather at a Committee Action Hearing to discuss, debate and take action on about 2,000 code change proposals submitted to the Group B 2012 codes.

The Committee Action Hearing, previously referred to as a Code Development Hearing, includes code change proposals submitted to the "Group B" codes: the International Residential Code for One- and Two-Family Dwellings (IRC), International Fire Code (IFC), International Energy Conservation Code (IECC), International Existing Building Code (IEBC), International Swimming Pool and Spa Code (ISPSC), International Property Maintenance Code (IPMC), International Code Council Performance Code for Buildings and Facilities (ICCPC), International Wildland-Urban Interface Code (IWUIC) and International Zoning Code (IZC). Action also will be taken on Chapter 1 of all the I-Codes, except the International Green Construction Code, and the administrative update of referenced standards in the 2012 I-Codes.

The outcome of the hearing, April 21-30 at the Sheraton Dallas Hotel, will be the basis for the 2015 Group B codes to be finalized at a Public Comment Hearing, formerly called a Final Action Hearing, later this year in Atlantic City, N.J.
