Southern Nevada Chapter of ICC Reports Recent Accomplishments

The Southern Nevada Chapter of ICC (SNICC), the home of EduCode each year, announced some of its' recent accomplishments and projects within the Las Vegas community. The Chapter's Public Outreach Program has made great strides in providing a number of community outreach programs, and its level of involvement is far and above the most it has been in years. Giving back to the community is its' goal each year, and the Chapter is extremely proud of providing funds for a number of local programs and causes that provide a better foundation for the industry. The Chapter is a major participant in a number of programs: the UNLV Solar Decathlon Stakeholder-DesertSol; the High School Technical Training Program; the Toddler Swim Grant Program; the Clark County High School Scholarship Program; and EduCode.

UNLV Solar Decathlon
The students at the University of Nevada at Las Vegas (UNLV) were selected to participate in the United Department of Energy's Solar Decathlon in 2013. The students designed and built a 800-square foot home that uses solar-thermal collectors and photovoltaic panels and can function off the grid, which is called DesertSol. The UNLV students came to SNICC and asked the Chapter to participate and become a stakeholder. With a generous donation of $25,000.00, along with other local donations the students were able to participate in the October 2013 Decathlon. Not only did they participate but they were the top American finisher, placing first among a number of other schools such as: Stanford, University of Southern California, and University of North Carolina. The only team to beat out Team UNLV was the team from the Vienna University of Technology of Vienna, Austria. Team UNLV consisted of 60-students from the engineering, architectural and communication colleges. The overall planning and production was in excess of 18 months. The project will now be placed on display at the Springs Preserve in Las Vegas, Nev., with the Chapter's logo permanently embossed.

High School Technical Training Program
The SNICC Chapter provided a grant of $21,000.00 to the high schools within the Clark County School District through the Public Outreach Program for the 2013-2014 school years. The grant will be provided to seven participating schools and each of the schools will receive the following: one ICC High School Membership that includes one loose-leaf version of the 2012 International Residential Code (IRC); 30 student memberships that include a soft-cover version of the 2012 IRC; 31 IRC Study Guides; one set of the 2012 IRC Commentary; and one PDF version of the 2012 IRC.

Toddler Swim Grant Program
Over the past seven years the Las Vegas Chapter has been providing funds county-wide for the Toddler Swim Program. This program is designed to teach Toddlers (years 1-4) to learn how to be water safe and teach the parents the A-B-C-D's of water safety. The grant of $1,500.00 to each of the seven local municipalities has allowed on the average of over 200 toddlers per year to train in this program. As a Chapter, SNICC is committed to reduce the number of drownings in Clark County; in 2012 there were only five fatal drownings and in 2013 the number was reduced to three. This is not the only vehicle that SNICC is using to champion drowning prevention; they also contributed $3,500.00 to the Southern Nevada Coalition for Child Drowning Prevention (SNCCDP). The SNCCDP is a regional organization that also promotes April Pools Day, the first day of April each year where community awareness is promoted about the dangers of drowning and how it can be prevented.

Clark County High School Scholarship Program
Each year the Public Outreach Committee of SNICC meets to review high school student applications for college scholarships. SNICC grants four $3,000 scholarships to local students who will be majoring in architecture, engineering or construction services. On average, the Committee reviews anywhere from 50-55 applications of local students, some of the criteria are: objective (area of study, grade point average, class ranking) and subjective (school activities, school recognition, achievements, community service and need).

EduCode
Each year, the Chapter promotes and organizes this professional educational program in concert with the International Code Council. This program features highly specialized courses for the industry professionals. These programs are developed for the building officials, architects, engineers, and construction managers. Courses offered are in: plumbing, mechanical, electrical, energy codes, structural, inspections, code enforcement, fire protection, leadership and management. The 2014 EduCode featured: over 75 classes in various disciplines; attendance of over 800 students for the week-long program, with worldwide attendance; full-day or half-day classes with up-to-date CEUs for attendees; professional and industry vendors in an EXPO of products; and a student appreciation night. For the first time at EduCode students were able to take certification exams that allow individuals the real-time opportunity of going to a class and then taking the exam immediately thereafter.

Chapters: Help Make ICC Annual Conference a Success with Pay It Forward Program

Dear ICC Chapter Leaders,

I hope this letter finds you well. My name is Jerry Sanzone, and I am the 2014 ICC Annual Conference Host Chapter Chairman; a member of the Building Officials Association of Florida (BOAF), the Florida state Chapter of the International Code Council (ICC), and a member of the Broward County Building Officials Association. BOAF and the South Florida regional ICC Chapters are extremely pleased to be hosting the 2014 ICC Annual Conference and Public Comment Hearings to be held in Fort Lauderdale from September 28 through October 7, 2014. All of the ICC Chapters in the state of Florida are working hard to make this year's Annual Conference a memorable conference, which will also result in the 2015 ICC
International Green Construction Code.

As you may be aware, hosting an ICC Annual Conference can be financially challenging to the host chapter, particularly in order to ensure the highest quality venue and events are provided for the almost 2,000 attendees that are anticipated to participate this year. As part of ICC Pay It Forward Program, I am reaching out to ICC State and Local Chapter leaders like you, asking for your chapter's support in the form of Pay It Forward sponsorships to help us fund promotional activities and special events throughout the conference. Your generous donation will make this year's conference another success and will also prominently place your Chapter's name in the conference Pay It Forward Contributor list, which will be publicized throughout the conference. Through generous sponsorships and donations we receive from ICC Chapters like yours, we can promote ICC, your local organization, and the local region in a positive manner to the participants that are expected to attend this year's conference from around the world. We can also promote the important work all ICC Members do every day to help build a safer world.

All Pay It Forward donations should be mailed to: The Building Officials Association of Florida, 3697 Lake Emma Road, Lake Mary, FL 32746-6121 and marked "2014 Annual Conference Donation".

Thank you in advance for your willingness to support ICC, BOAF and the South Florida chapters of ICC in making this year's conference a success, as together we promote, ensure, and enhance life and property safety for stakeholders here at home, and around the world.
