Milford Building Official Nabs Regional Award

Tim Brandt, Milford Township's building official, was recently named Building Inspector of the Year by the Southeast Michigan Building Officials & Inspectors Association (SEMBOIA). According to its website, SEMBOIA was established in 1963 to administer building codes and to obtain technical information, which is shared with its members, from authoritative sources on matters concerning the construction industry. SEMBOIA provides continuing education training for the re-registration of building officials, building inspectors, and plan examiners as required by Michigan law. Brandt, who belongs to the organization, is responsible for reviewing plans for zoning and building code compliance, as well as on-site inspections for code compliance within the township.

"It's nice to be recognized by your peers," said Brandt, who's been with the township 17 years. "It's a feel-good thing. I like the people I work with at the township. I enjoy working with the public. It's hard being the 'no' guy, as far as what you can and can't do on your property; that part is difficult. But I enjoy working with people."

"Tim is an outstanding individual who is very fair with people when he does inspections," Milford Township Supervisor Don Green said. "He goes out of his way to explain the process and the details to people, and help them fix whatever might be wrong. He comes in every day and works hard, and when he's not busy, he takes it upon himself to do extra work." Read more

Westlake Inspectors Save Woman from $20,000 Basement Waterproofing Repair

Peggy Oliver of Westlake, Ohio, was desperately looking for a solution to the water issues that were attacking her basement, but she was stunned when she started to get estimates for basement waterproofing. "I was in deep shock, I really was," said Oliver. "Just under $20,000, and then there was another one, either $29,000 or $39,000. I said that's out of the question." However, Oliver signed a $20,000 contract for repairs, and issued a $6,400 down payment on the job.

Days later, the Westlake Department of Engineering inspectors visited Oliver's home to look over the job. The inspectors issued a five-page report, after doing tests at her home, and clearly determined the water issues were caused by clogged downspouts, and not a major foundation breach. The estimated repairs would cost no more than $2,000, and not the $20,000 estimated by the contractor Oliver hired.

Consumers should always contact their city building department before signing up for a major home improvement project. Make sure to always take out the proper building permits, and have follow-up inspections as a job moves forward. "Talk to more than one person, get information from knowledgeable people in the trades, and your city hall," said Oliver. "If you need a permit, you need a permit, that's to protect you." Read more
