Tomberlin Named Branch Chief for Fairfax County, Virginia

International Code Council Board of Directors Vice President Guy Tomberlin, CBO, has been named Branch Chief Residential and Light Commercial Inspections for the Fairfax County, Va., Department of Public Works and Environmental Services. Tomberlin has held the positions of Residential and Commercial Inspector, Commercial Mechanical Inspection Supervisor, Chief Plumbing Inspector, Code Specialist, and Manager of Building Code Services (Permitting) before he was named Branch Chief Residential and Light Commercial Inspections.

He manages the daily operation of residential/light commercial inspections, ensuring that construction complies with the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code and departmental policies and procedures.

A 29-year industry veteran, Tomberlin has served on the International Plumbing and Mechanical Code Development Committees and the Plumbing Mechanical Gas Listing Committee for the ICC Evaluation Service. He also served a two-year term on the International Accreditation Service Board of Directors and has earned more than 20 national certifications from the Code Council. He is a past chair of the Executive Council of ICC's Region XII Chapter and a past president of the Virginia Plumbing and Mechanical Inspectors Association and the Virginia Building and Code Officials Association.

Construction Industry Adds 22,000 Jobs in July

New government data shows the uneven nature of the construction industry's recovery, as the sector added 22,000 jobs in July, but suffered a pullback in spending in June, according to an analysis by the Associated General Contractors of America. Association officials said that uncertainty about federal funding for a range of infrastructure and construction programs is one reason for the uneven recovery.

States Where It's Hardest to Get Full-Time Construction Work

States that rely heavily on housing and construction sectors continue to feel the effects of the housing crisis. For example, in four states (Arizona, Nevada, Florida and California) construction employment contracted more than 30 percent from its pre-recession peak through June 2014.

Women in Construction Technology

The role of women in the construction industry is changing. The numbers are showing the pure amount of women in this market is declining; however the position of women in technology initiatives is on the uptick in recent months. However, with the loss of more than 2.5 million construction jobs between 2007 and 2010, there has also been a sharp decline of women working in the construction industry. Since its peak in 2007, more than 300,000 women workers have left the construction industry.
