New ISPSC Helps Pool Builders and Code Officials Speak the Same Language

The Association of Pool & Spa Professionals (APSP) announced the 2015 International Swimming Pool and Spa Code (ISPSC), the industry's only comprehensive model code covering both residential and commercial swimming pools and spas. The new code, produced jointly with APSP and published by the International Code Council, uses prescriptive and performance-related provisions to establish minimum safety requirements for public and residential pools, spas and hot tubs.

"The International Swimming Pool and Spa Code was developed by ICC Members with input from a wide range of industry experts, which in 2012 made it the first comprehensive code to address and upgrade pool and spa safety," said ICC Chief Executive Officer Dominic Sims, CBO. "Changes in the 2015 edition continue to improve public safety and provide code compliance guidance to code officials, manufacturers and installers."

New ICC Publication Adds a Personal Touch to Building Inspection

Inspector Skills, a new publication from the International Code Council, is the first book ever to address the non-technical soft skills necessary for the people-related aspects of inspection for code compliance. When coupled with a solid technical knowledge of codes and construction practices, effective soft skills enhance an inspector's ability to interact with the public and contractors to successfully carry out job duties. The new guide is ideal for both veteran and new inspectors in any construction discipline.

It addresses essential soft skills such as decision making, problem solving, professionalism, integrity, honesty and time management. These strengths support an inspector's ability to ensure buildings are resilient, safe and code-compliant.

Benefits of Special Inspection are the Focus of New ICC Manual

The most common contributing factor to significant structural damage and building failure after extreme natural events such as earthquakes and hurricanes is construction that fails to comply with codes, standards and design documents. The new Code Council publication, Special Inspection Manual: 2012 Edition, created in collaboration with Code Council subsidiary International Accreditation Service (IAS), discusses mitigating these issues by practicing specialized oversight and increasing inspection frequency, duration and detail during construction.

Special Inspection Manual contains requirements involving special inspection within the International Building Code, descriptions of required special inspections, and information to create a special inspection program. It supports preparation for special inspection certification exams and aids building departments in creating procedures and forms to run a special inspection overview program. The content is based on recommended practices and the consensus of building officials, design professionals, and inspection and testing agencies. It outlines the responsibilities of all involved including the special inspector, building official, project owner, engineer or architect of record, and contractor. It supports preparation for special inspection certification exams and aids building departments in creating procedures and forms to run a special inspection overview program. Additionally, the book provides guidelines to assist ICC Member jurisdictions desiring to implement accreditation requirements or to adopt IAS's Accreditation Program for Special Inspection Agencies. The manual is also helpful for design professionals writing statements of special inspections.
