National Fire Academy Course: Developing and Implementing Public Policy

Openings are available for the September 7–12 class of R0670: Developing and Implementing Public Policy. This course addresses how codes and regulations can be used as an effective component in fire prevention, fire mitigation and overall community risk reduction. Students will identify a risk in their own community and work through the five stages in the public policy process. The course will address how to use a risk assessment to prioritize risk; develop a problem statement and recommend a public policy; design a strategy to build support for the policy, understand the issue resolution process; and how to market, apply and evaluate the new public policy.

Who should apply? Individuals who have previous experience with code development, implementation and enforcement as well as those who have little or no experience but would like to learn more about the process are encouraged to apply. The target audience is fire chiefs, fire marshals, inspectors, code practitioners, plans reviewers, building officials, fire and life safety educators, as well as fire and EMS officers. Preference will be given to teams such as a fire marshal and a building official from the same community. Read more.
