The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has announced the release of The FEMA National Earthquake Hazards Reduction Program: Accomplishments in Fiscal Year 2013, which includes a big shout-out to the International Code Council's Building Safety Month initiative in May. From their press release:

This report describes many exciting initiatives and projects of the FEMA Building Science Branch and its partners in support of the National Earthquake Hazards Reduction Program (NEHRP) in 2013. These include:

• New guidance and tools, such as performance-based seismic design guidelines (FEMA P-58) and training and instructional materials for the 2009 NEHRP Recommended Seismic Provisions (FEMA P-752 CD).
• Continued and expanded support by FEMA Regional and Headquarters staff for ShakeOut drills and the May 2013 Building Safety Month.
• Training in earthquake topics offered at the State and local level through the National Earthquake Technical Assistance Program (NETAP), which reached about 4,500 people via 93 courses in 14 States and U.S. Territories.
• Best practices and new and innovative projects undertaken by the States and U.S. Territories and organizations which received FEMA NEHRP support to mitigate the earthquake risk and increase the disaster resilience of our communities.

FEMA has been and continues to be a strong partner of Building Safety Month, having worked with the White House to earn a Presidential proclamation for the past three years. The Code Council is proud to work with an agency as committed to hazard mitigation and preparedness as it is to emergency response.
