Disaster Safety & Mitigation Week Kicks Off

Disaster Safety & Mitigation Week kicks off with initiatives to raise consumer awareness of storm shelters, safe rooms and donation of safe rooms to tornado victims in Southern Indiana. Considering the tragic loss of life and property damage experienced in just the last two years from high-wind events, ICC Foundation Building Safety Month is placing special emphasis on safe rooms this year.

"The International Code Council/National Storm Shelter Association (NSSA) Standard for the Design and Construction of Storm Shelters is a tool to help communities protect their residents from disasters and consolidates previous references published by NSSA, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Red Cross." ICC CEO Rick Weiland said.

The Federal Alliance for Safe Homes (FLASH) will attend popular country pop music group Lady Antebellum's concert in Louisville, Ky., to raise awareness of and benefit Southern Indiana tornado victims. FLASH will partner with the NSSA to donate safe rooms. The ICC Foundation, FLASH, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), and NSSA will host a booth at the concert to distribute disaster safety and mitigation information.

"Tornado safe rooms save lives," says Leslie Chapman Henderson, President and CEO of the Federal Alliance for Safe Homes®, co-sponsor alongside FEMA of Building Safety Disaster and Safety Mitigation Week. "A properly built safe room protects families from high-wind events such as tornadoes and hurricanes, creates a multi-use space in the home and adds to its value," she says.
