Annual Conference Wrap-Up

Chapter representatives attending this year's Annual Conference in Minneapolis participated in a number of events. In addition to the Expo, training and numerous hospitality opportunities, chapter leaders also participated in Open Regions Meetings, the Chapter President's Breakfast and the Chapter Leadership Program.

On Monday evening, each ICC Region held open meetings and caucused prior to ICC Board elections on Tuesday morning. Code Council President Adolf Zubia visited each meeting and installed new officers for ICC Midwest Region V and Gulf Coast Region IX. Earlier in the year, ICC Northeast Regional Coalition (Region VI) sent a resolution to the ICC Board of Directors requesting information on the establishment, function and responsibility of a region. The official response from the Board, hand-delivered to the chapter by Director Ron Piester during their meeting, can be read here.

Over 250 Chapter presidents and officers attended the Chapter Presidents' Breakfast on Monday, September 15. Code Council Board Immediate Past President Steve Shapiro recognized eight new chapters approved this year and their leadership in attendance at the breakfast. Past President Shapiro also announced the 2008 Chapter of the Year and four Chapter Merit Award winners. The first guest speaker was Bob Boyer, Past President of the Building Officials Association of Florida, the 2007 Chapter of the Year. BOAF is an extremely successful and effective chapter and Boyer shared some of the secrets of their success. Next to the podium was Patrick Higgins from the City of Minneapolis who served as the 2008 Hospitality Committee Chairman along with Patrick Parsley, President of ICC Upper Great Plains Region III. Higgins welcomed the Code Council attendees to his city while Parsley enlightened the audience on what it takes to be a host chapter to the ICC Annual Conference. Parsley’s light-hearted speech poked fun at the large use of acronyms used by our industry.

Also recognized at the breakfast were the 2007 chapter award winners who had joined delegates in Washington, D.C., in May 2007 during Building Safety Week for Capitol Hill Day. Each winning chapter will receive a flag that was flown over the Capitol on that day while they were advocating for the Community Building Code Administrative Grant Program.

Approximately 40 chapter members attended the 2008 Chapter Leadership Program on Tuesday afternoon. ICC Instructor Terrell Stripling debuted a new Chapter Leadership seminar. Participants learned about the characteristics of a leader, the principles of leadership and how to apply them in everyday situations. Chapter Relations VP Laura Scott plans to work on developing additional leadership seminars to be debuted at future conferences.
