ICC Evaluation Service Experiences Record-Setting Growth in 2014

ICC Evaluation Service (ICC-ES) 2014 first quarter activity is up 25 percent compared to the same period one year ago. The growth is attributed to a new business model that reduced the time it took to evaluate products and generate evaluation reports and PMG listings, and a renewed focus on customer service.


ICC-ES Seeks Interested Individuals to Serve on Its New Board of Managers

ICC-ES will reorganize its Board of Managers and Advisory Board as part of the overall process that was initiated in 2010 to change its status to a Limited Liability Company. ICC-ES seeks to fill openings on the new board with qualified individuals who will participate and contribute to the governance of ICC-ES through effective guidance on programs, activities and goals. The change will bring several existing members of each Board into a newly formed ICC-ES Board of Managers.


Clarification Bulletin to AC232, Acceptance Criteria for Anchor Channels in Concrete Elements

Recently, ICC-ES has become aware of possible confusion regarding the external interpretation of specific text and review criteria contained in AC232, Acceptance Criteria for Anchor Channels in Concrete Elements. ICC-ES Earns Prestigious WSSPC Award in Excellence

The Western States Seismic Policy Council (WSSPC) Board of Directors has honored ICC Evaluation Service, LLC, Evaluation Report Program as a recipient of the 2014 Non-Profit Agency Efforts Award in Excellence. This award recognizes ICC-ES Evaluation Reports for identifying safe, effective materials and designs that provide public safety to combat seismic activity.


ICC-ES, QAI Labs Align Resources to Expedite Product Testing and Evaluations

ICC Evaluation Service and QAI Laboratories have aligned resources to create a "one-stop shop" to help customers bring new products and technology advancements to market as fast as possible. This enables ICC-ES to facilitate testing laboratory services to applicants, along with factory inspection, product evaluation and certification, all through a single source within ICC-ES' service package. Customers will benefit from the high quality of service and speed of testing at a competitive price.


Standards Council of Canada Expands ICC-ES PMG Scope Accreditation

The Standards Council of Canada has granted the ICC Evaluation Service Plumbing, Mechanical and Fuel Gas (PMG) program a scope expansion for gas products. The scope expansion for the existing capability allows the ICC-ES PMG program to certify fuel gas products for the Canadian market. The expanded scope has long been accredited in the United States by the American National Standards Institute. This expanded scope will allow more manufacturers to distribute products in Canada following certification with ICC-ES PMG.


Loos & Co. Receives ICC-ES Building Product Listing for Seismic Components

ICC Evaluation Service issued a new building product listing (ESL-1004) to Loos & Co., for its Seismic Wire Rope/Cable™ Bracing System Components. The listing demonstrates the products meet the requirements for tension only bracing systems in Section 9.3.5.2 of NFPA 13 (Installation of Sprinkler Systems) for Fire Suppression Piping and Equipment using the material requirements of ASCE 19-10 (Structural Applications of Steel Cables for Buildings) as referenced in the 2012 International Building Code sections 903.3 and 2208.1.


ICC-ES and DIBt Meet to Discuss Benefits of Collaboration

ICC-ES and Deutsches Institut für Bautechnik (DIBt) management met recently in Berlin to discuss future opportunities for ICC-ES clients. As one of ICC-ES' collaborators and the approval body in the field of construction for Germany and Europe, DIBt offers opportunities for U.S. manufacturers in the European market. In Memoriam: ICC-ES Mourns the Loss of Bohdan Nicholas (Nick) Horeczko

Nick Horeczko, longtime Director of Professional Services for the ICC Evaluation Service, passed away April 8. He was 74. With 52 years of civil engineering experience in design, construction, manufacturing, research, building code services and building products evaluation—including 42 of those years with ICC-ES and the legacy organization International Conference of Building Officials—Nick was well-known and highly respected within the industry for his knowledge and warm and inviting demeanor.


June Meeting of the ICC-ES Evaluation Committee to be Held in Los Angeles

New building products and technologies are being developed constantly. When there are no clear requirements in the code for new products and methods, the ICC-ES Evaluation Committee approves new and revised Acceptance Criteria used to evaluate products. The ICC-ES Evaluation Committee will meet in Los Angeles June 3 to consider revisions to several existing criteria and new criteria for approval. Their discussions will include topics ranging from Acceptance Criteria for Shrinkage Compensating Devices to Wood-frame horizontal diaphragms, vertical shear walls and braced walls with alternative fasteners. ICC-ES Evaluation Committee meetings are open to the public with no registration required. Those who cannot attend may register for the complimentary webcast.

Importance of EPDs Discussed in Design and Build with Metal Column

A recent column in Design and Build with Metal by the Metal Construction Association Technical Director, Scott Kriner, AIA, LEED AP, points out how environmental product declarations (EPDs) are a valuable resource to designers when determining sustainable and energy efficient properties of products they specify for projects. Kriner discusses the history behind development of EPDs and how they allow for more transparency when comparing and choosing products.
