SCC expands acceptance
of ICC-ES evaluations.

The Standards Council of Canada (SCC) now recognizes ICC Evaluation Service (ICC-ES) building product listings, a new service supporting manufacturers who distribute products in Canada and the U.S. The recognition allows ICC-ES to certify many building products for the Canadian market. Some of the products ICC-ES can now list to Canadian requirements include iron and steel products, elements and structures of buildings. The acceptance of ICC-ES provides easier access to the Canadian markets by eliminating a hurdle, allowing ICC-ES to be a sole source provider of code compliance recognition in the U.S. and Canada. This acceptance will also improve innovation by reducing compliance differences between U.S. and Canadian markets.

Don't miss the May 20
ICC-ES free webinar.

The ICC-ES webinar, "Approving or Selecting Building Products with Confidence," is designed to help building professionals (building officials, specifiers, designers and others) better understand the process that goes into developing an ICC-ES Evaluation Report and Building Products Listing, so that they can have confidence when approving or specifying a building product for installation. Register for the complimentary ICC-ES webinar to learn why ICC-ES is the most preferred agency when it comes to technical evaluations among building officials. CEUs provided. Please note that all webinars are held from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Central Time.

ICC-ES Evaluation Committee holds meeting in L.A.

New building products and technologies are constantly being developed. When there are no clear requirements in the code for new products and methods, the ICC-ES Evaluation Committee approves new and revised Acceptance Criteria used to evaluate products. The ICC-ES Evaluation Committee met Feb. 10 in Los Angeles to consider revisions to several existing criteria and new criteria for approval. Their discussions included topics ranging from proposed new acceptance criteria for cross-laminated timber panels for use as components of floor and roof decks to proposed revisions to the acceptance criteria for structural wood-based products. ICC-ES Evaluation Committee meetings are open to the public with no registration required. Those who cannot attend may register for the next complimentary webcast to take place in June. Resolution of the items considered during this meeting may be found here. The next meeting will be held in early June in Los Angeles.

Clarification on the application of the ß term in AC308.

During the October 2014 ACI Committee 355 meeting in Washington D.C. a question was raised regarding the application of the terms αlt and αst in Eq. (10-12) of ACI 355.4-11. Specifically, it was noted that these terms are evaluated using the results of tests that also provide values for the evaluation of ß. In the ensuing discussion doubts were raised as to whether the reductions resulting from long-term and short-term load temperature influence are applied twice (double-counted) in Eq. (10-12). This is however not the case as will be shown.

ICC, ICC-ES offer value and
support during D&C Week.

The International Code Council (ICC) and ICC-ES had another successful year exhibiting at the International Builders' Show and the Kitchen and Bath Industry Show, which were co-located as part of the National Association of Home Builders' (NAHB) Second Annual Design and Construction Week. There were more than 80,000 attendees during the shows. As supporting organizations of the event, 20 ICC and ICC-ES staff attended and assisted numerous manufacturers with questions about the ICC-ES building product evaluation and listing programs as well as the plumbing, mechanical and fuel gas listing programs. Visitors learned about the many unparalleled customer service initiatives and value of the ICC-ES marks. Additionally, ICC Chief Executive Officer Dominic Sims discussed demands on workforce development to attract younger people to be code officials and in other construction industry jobs during the NAHB Codes and Standards Committee meeting.

The effects of temperature on
post-installed adhesive anchors.

Post-installed adhesive anchors are frequently used in the construction industry for connections to concrete and masonry structures. They are used as alternatives to other types of post-installed anchors like expansion anchors, undercut anchors or screw anchors. For the case of adding rebar to hardened concrete, known as post-installed rebar, adhesive anchor systems are typically the only option to make this connection. Adhesives used for anchoring typically take the form of either a two-part resin and hardener (e.g., epoxy) or a two-part resin and catalyst (e.g. acrylate) that can be packaged in cartridges, glass tubes, foil packages or delivered in semi-bulk containers. There are two primary types of anchoring adhesives: epoxy resin systems and radical-cured systems, which include vinylesters, acrylates and polyester resins.
