FSMC CHAIRMAN'S CORNER
Busy 2014 Ahead as the Challenge of Protecting the Public Never Diminishes

Fulton Cochran, CFCO, CBO
Chair—Governing Committee; ICC Fire Service Membership Council
Henderson, Nevada, Fire Department

It was good to see everyone and meet new Fire Service Membership Council (FSMC) Members at ICC's 2013 Annual Conference in Atlantic City, N.J. The Group A and B codes, including the International Fire Code (IFC), have now been finalized for the 2015 editions. Congratulations to all who participated in the process.

However, no sooner does the 2015 code development cycle end before the 2018 cycle begins. During the upcoming year ICC will be making a call for Members to apply for the various technical committees that need to be staffed for the 2018 codes. Please apply if you are interested and qualified. The ICC and our FSMC are only as strong as the Members who represent the fire service and serve on these technical committees.

The Code Council has rolled out cdpACCESS, the new, online cloud-based tool built exclusively for ICC's code development process. I encourage all Members to learn about this new technology and use the Group C cycle as a test run. Look for items of interest to the fire service within the International Green Construction Code (IgCC) and then vote on these items using the remote participation feature of cdpACCESS.

The 2015 IgCC submittals are due on Jan. 10, 2014. ICC's Group C Committee Action Hearing will be held April 27-May 4 in Memphis, Tenn. The 2014 Annual Conference and Group C Public Comment Hearing will be held Sept. 28 through-Oct. 7 at the Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Convention Center. Please make a mental note that the names of the hearings have changed to match the cdpACCESS process.

2014 is going to be a busy year for all of us.  Code development never stops and the challenge of protecting the public does not diminish just because we have finalized the 2015 I-Codes. If you want to plan ahead, the schedule for the 2018 code cycle is available by clicking here. Have an enjoyable holiday season and stay safe.
