Attendees of the IAS Uncertainty in Measurements (MU) training programs in Las Vegas and Dubai‚ United Arab Emirates‚ learned critical uncertainty measurement processes and procedures. The two-day courses reviewed ISO/IEC 17025 requirements concerning MU‚ and new interpretations of ANSI/NCSL standard guidelines. It also included a first-ever laboratory module that provided hands-on tools to develop accurate uncertainty budgets. more>>

The Department of Municipal Affairs (DMA) of Abu Dhabi has hired a leading international organization to develop and enhance building safety standards that are required to comply with the International Building Code (IBC). To help implement the IBC in the Emirate‚ the DMA signed a memorandum of understanding with the International Code Council. more>>

Building department professionals from across the United States and from the United Arab Emirates gathered for the IAS Building Department Accreditation (BDA) Lead Evaluator Program in Minneapolis. The three-day course provided an overview of how to conduct a BDA on-site evaluation. One of the primary strengths of the BDA Program is its peer review process‚ and credentialed building department professionals conducting on-site pre-evaluations/full evaluations and surveillance visits. more>>

The International Accreditation Service (IAS)‚ now in its fifth year of independent operation, is progressing from one success to another. The organization increased its contract assessor base by more than 50 percent‚ raised overall revenue two-and-one-half times‚ and‚ except for a nominal fee adjustment in the Building Department Accreditation Program‚ managed to keep fee increases in check. more>>

IAS President Chuck Ramani was presented with the William J. Tangye Award during the International Code Council’s 2008 Annual Conference in Minneapolis for his skill‚ intelligence and singular dedication to quality. The award is given in honor of the late Bill Tangye‚ the first Code Council CEO‚ to a staff member for unparalleled service. The award holds a special significance to Ramani because it was Tangye who supported his efforts to form IAS in the early days before consolidation of the legacy code groups into the Code Council. The success of IAS is a tribute to his hard work‚ passion and dedication. more>>

Committee Considers Criteria

The IAS Accreditation Committee met during the Code Council’s Annual Conference in Minneapolis to consider proposed revisions to several IAS Accreditation Criteria‚ including criteria for a new program on the accreditation of Third-Party Permitting‚ Plan Review and Inspection Service Providers (AC402). IAS developed AC402 in recognition of the important role private firms play to ensure public safety. more>>

The keen interest shown by building officials to learn the benefits of Building Department Accreditation during a Cracker Barrel event at the Code Council’s Annual Conference indicates a need for more IAS training and education on the requirements in Chapter 17 of the 2006 International Building Code. IAS staff made three popular presentations at the roundtable event, including an eye-opening discussion about fabrication and inspection of steel structures. more>>

Seven building departments were honored at the Code Council’s Annual Conference for achieving IAS Building Department Accreditation in the past year. “IAS evaluators assess the critical elements of all the good practices and determine what measures are needed to improve the system‚” said IAS President Chuck Ramani. “Those earning building department accreditation are the best in the field of operations in terms of competence‚ efficiency and deliverability of service.” more>>

The Laborers-AGC Education and Training Fund is the first recipient of IAS accreditation under the IAS Work Force Qualification program. IAS accredits Laborers-AGC Training operations under the IAS Accreditation Criteria for Training Agencies for Work Force Qualification Programs (AC371)‚ and the IAS Accreditation Criteria for Curriculum Development for Workforce Qualification Programs (AC372). IAS President Chuck Ramani honored Laborers-AGC representatives Josh Kapelner and Cindy Herliekson with an accreditation certificate during the IAS Accreditation Committee meeting in Minneapolis. more>>
