IAS Educates at Cracker-Barrel

International Accreditation Service (IAS) staff had the opportunity to make three presentations at the International Code Council’s popular Cracker-Barrel roundtable event at its Annual Conference in Minneapolis. IAS topics included the benefits of Building Department Accreditation, a building official’s perspective about Building Department Accreditation and an eye-opening discussion about fabrication and inspection of steel structures. The Cracker-Barrel sessions include a short presentation to 8-10 people, followed by a 20-minute question-and-answer period.

Sandi McCracken, IAS senior accreditation officer, introduced the topic “How Do You Know Your Steel Structures Are Code-Compliant?” The keen interest shown by the many building officials who attended this Cracker-Barrel session indicated to staff that there is a need for more training and education on the requirements outlined in Chapter 17 of the 2006 International Building Code (IBC). Section 1704.2.2 of the IBC requires that approval be based on review of the fabricator’s written procedural and quality control manuals and periodic auditing of fabrication practices by an approved special inspection agency.

In the future, IAS will introduce and host training sessions across the country on approving special inspection agencies and fabricator inspection programs for building officials. If you are interested in IAS training, please send an email to info@iasonline.org.

Be sure to attend next year’s Cracker-Barrel sessions at the Annual Meeting in Maryland.
