Friend and Supporter of IAS Retires from UL

Jim Beyreis, Vice President, Technical Training—Global Fire & Signaling Sector, officially retired from Underwriters Laboratories (UL) on July 16.

Over the course of his career, Jim made numerous contributions to the UL Public Safety Mission. Jim started as an Assistant Engineer in UL's Fire Protection Department. Jim rose through the ranks, eventually becoming Vice President of Engineering. He chaired several UL Councils, including the Fire Council, Electrical Council and the Management Systems Advisory Council. He also chaired numerous Industry Advisory Councils (the precursor to UL's Standards Technical Panels), UL's Engineering Policy Committee, and, up through his retirement, UL's PE Awards Committee.

Jim's achievements were recognized by external groups as well. He received a Distinguished Service Award from the National Fire Protection Association and was named a Fellow by the Society of Fire Protection Engineers. He also has the distinction of being one of the first seven UL colleagues admitted to the William Henry Merrill Society and named a UL Corporate Fellow, an honor which is reserved for those who have made a significant and sustained contribution to the Public Safety Mission.

In more recent years, Jim focused on internal training initiatives, helping prepare the next generation of UL technical colleagues to follow in his—and other distinguished colleagues'—footsteps.
