Building Department Accreditation Takes Center Stage
IAS experts hosted a number of activities during the Code Council's Annual Conference in Charlotte, North Carolina, to highlight building department accreditation around the country. Accreditation in the program provides independent verification that building departments operate under the highest ethical, legal and technical standards while providing enhanced life safety and property protection for its citizens. Building code professionals participated in the Building Department Accreditation (BDA) Lead Evaluator training and the educational Cracker Barrel luncheon. Two newly accredited building departments were recognized in the awards luncheon.

C
ode officials from Abu Dhabi, Canada, and the U.S. received intense training in a three-day Lead Evaluator program that prepared them to serve on IAS Building Department Accreditation Evaluation teams. The training provided comprehensive coverage of 13 distinctive categories included in the Accreditation Criteria (AC251) that is the basis for the IAS Building Department Accreditation. The evaluation teams conduct on-site assessments of building departments pursuing accreditation.

IAS also joined the fun and educational Cracker Barrel luncheon to offer insight into the benefits of Building Department Accreditation and Registration Programs. The Cracker Barrel event is the Code Council's way of introducing attendees to a range of Council services through quick 20-minute interactive presentations. The presentations are held at tables seating just 10 people, and offer insight into a specific topic, such as building department accreditation.

Finally, the ICC Annual Conference Awards Luncheon provided the perfect venue for code officials from across the nation to recognize two building departments for achieving the status of IAS Accredited Building Departments. The Inspection and Code Enforcement Department of Beaufort County, South Carolina, and the Development Services Department of San Antonio, Texas, received plaques and were congratulated by IAS President Chuck Ramani for their achievements.
