In support of a New York City Department of Buildings requirement for special inspection agencies to become accredited by IAS, IAS Senior Accreditation Officer Sandi McCracken presented a training program on Guidelines to Becoming an Accredited Special Inspections Agency on September 28 at the New York City College of Technology/CUNY in Brooklyn. The training was sponsored by the New York City Department of Buildings, the New York State Society of Professional Engineers, the American Society of Civil Engineers and the New York City College of Technology.
The training provided an overview of the IAS Accreditation Criteria AC291 and ISO/IEC 17020 requirements affecting Special Inspection Agencies (SIA). Specific topics included the accreditation process, application details, timelines for submittals and reviews, assessment process, costs, how to put together the quality documentation, and other accreditation issues. The training session also included a presentation based on IAS staff assessment experiences as a result of field visits and insights from the quality system review.
The New York City Department of Buildings, Office of Technical Certification and Research, and the Office of Engineering and Technical Affairs also provided an overview of New York City Construction Codes and Department Rules on Special Inspection, including Chapter 17 (Special Inspections) of the 2008 NYC Building Code and an overview of 1RCNY 101-06 (Special Inspection Rule and Appendix A for the qualifications of the special inspectors).
This training program will be offered again in the near future and has been approved by the Practicing Institute of Engineering Inc. for compliance with New York State Mandatory Continuing Education requirements for Professional Engineers for 6 PDH(s).
