Tribute to a Man of Quality: Patrick N. Toney, PE

Toney was a giant in the metal building systems industry. He independently developed and administered Star Building Systems' (now NCI) Quality Assurance Systems Program. Through the years, he provided tremendous support to the technical research performed by the Metal Building Manufacturers Association (MBMA).

He personally conducted structural testing and product research, including Underwriters Laboratories UL90 and Corps of Engineers wind uplift testing. He also participated in bolted moment connection testing and assisted in the development of AISC Design Guide 16, Bolted Moment Connections. Pat was a strong and dedicated leader on the MBMA Accreditation Committee.

These thoughts are about his accomplishments; but the deeper story is in the essence of what he meant to others.

"Patrick will certainly be missed by many," comments Sandi McCracken, Program Manager, International Accreditation Service. "He carried so much knowledge and openly shared that knowledge. His attention to detail was second to none and I was always forced to tighten up my thinking cap when we spoke because I knew it was going to be a challenge. He gave thought to every action; and while he knew the end result, he was persistent (and sometimes patient) while he made his point clear. Patrick leaves a tremendous footprint, character and legacy within our industry. He is a man to be admired. I do miss him."

Those who worked with him daily know the consistency of his commitment to quality and to the spirit of quality that permeated everything he accomplished. "Pat was certainly one of the most knowledgeable and respected people I have ever had the privileged of working with," says Mark Fritz, Vice President of Manufacturing, NCI Building Systems. "He leaves a great legacy within our company; and his contributions to the MBMA and our industry as a whole was tremendous."

Pat's keen eye for detail and quality extended into his home life where he enjoyed completing construction and home improvement projects. Our thoughts go out to his wife, Gertie, his children, and his entire extended family.
