The Building Officials Association of Texas (BOAT) approved a resolution during its 2016 Annual Conference in Sugarland, Texas, recognizing the city of McKinney Building Inspections Department for achieving International Accreditation Service (IAS) accreditation. Assistant Building Official Jason Smith and Chief Building Official Rick Herzberger accepted the resolution on behalf of McKinney at the BOAT conference.

The city of McKinney Building Inspections Department earned the IAS Building Department/Code Enforcement Agency Accreditation that signifies the department operates under the highest professional and technical standards and provides a high standard of public safety and services to the community. McKinney joins 23 other cities in the United States with this accreditation, and is one of three cities in Texas that is accredited.

The International Accreditation Service used 13 criteria accreditation categories to assess the city's building departments. These included basic jurisdictional information, department staff, permitting, budget, construction codes, plan reviews, professional credentials/licenses, inspections, certificate of occupancies, on-site evaluations, annual reports, reevaluation, and complaints/appeals. Throughout the accreditation process, IAS evaluators rigorously assess critical elements of the building department, such as customer service, code interpretation and enforcement, and fiscal strength.

"The city of McKinney is exceedingly proud of the entire Building Inspections Team for their professionalism and desire to improve day-to-day operations and efficiencies," said McKinney Interim City Manager Tom Muehlenbeck. "This accreditation confirms the proficiency and effectiveness of our building department and their commitment to safety and excellence."

"The International Accreditation Service accreditation has helped us identify and implement opportunities that drive a high performance organization and encourage professional growth, while raising awareness of building codes and safe building practices," said McKinney Chief Building Official Rick Herzberger. "Our job tasks and procedures have become much more consistent, which strengthens our departmental accountability and improves our quality of customer service. This accreditation would not have been possible without the support and participation from all city of McKinney departments as well as the Mayor and City Council."
