IAS Director of Conformity Assessment Dr. George Anastasopoulos, and IAS Assistant Accreditation Officer Patrick McCullen delivered a presentation entitled, "Top 5 Challenges of Calibration Laboratories during the Accreditation Process" at the NCSL International (NCSLI) Annual Conference last month in St. Paul, Minn.

The presentation included a poster board visual aid and featured statistical information ascertained from review of IAS on-site assessment reports of IAS-accredited calibration laboratories. The IAS team began this study by reviewing approximately 100 randomly selected IAS Calibration Laboratory assessment reports from the previous three years. The findings (major non-compliances) from these reports were reviewed, tallied up and categorized according to the relevant clause(s) of ISO/IEC Standard 17025:2005, to which each finding pertained. Additionally, trends were identified with respect to a calibration laboratory's management system maturity and the findings that were most commonly identified. These data points, analyses and recommendations will be included in a future IAS publication.

The IAS Calibration Laboratory Accreditation Program has been operating for more than 10 years and is currently recognized by the Asia Pacific Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation and the International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation.

IAS also had an exhibit booth during the exposition portion of the NCSLI conference. IAS has been a member of NCSLI, a nonprofit organization, for 14 years. NCSLI membership is open to any organization with an interest in the science of measurement and its application in research, development, education or commerce.
