When Disaster Strikes Institute provides knowledge
and resources needed to assist communities
after natural disasters.

Did you know that from the time a disaster is declared, a community has only 72 hours to assess the damage and report it to the federal government to receive direct financial assistance? The When Disaster Strikes Institute will help you be prepared when you're called upon to help.

The When Disaster Strikes Institute is one of only two post-disaster assessment programs in the country that are nationally recognized by the National Incident Response System. Throughout this interactive, two-day event, participants will receive expert training and valuable materials needed to become a valuable resource that every community needs.

Participants will be better able to:

  • Understand the roles and responsibilities of ICC Disaster Response Inspectors.
  • Understand the role of the National Incident Management System in disaster response.
  • Prepare for mobilization and working within disaster environments.
  • Understand and conduct ATC compliant building evaluations.
  • Understand placarding and posting.
"This seminar was an amazing event and I was glad I could attend," said recent participant Lucas Pump, a housing inspector. "It provided a new way to view code enforcement after a natural disaster. The instructor, William Bracken, is very knowledgeable and provided us with a wealth of information. This seminar is a great training tool in understanding disaster events, communicating with victims, and how to conduct post-disaster inspections."

"I found the course very informative, as did my inspection staff," added Deputy Building Official Cody Christensen. "The course builds a foundation for the role of code officials/inspectors during disaster response. William Bracken did a great job of keeping the class interesting and supported the education with a great deal of first-hand experience."
