Nick Carver, Building Official and Interim Director of the Environment and Economic Development Department for the city of Maplewood, Minn., was presented the 2015 Raising the Profile Award during a Building Safety Month reception at ICC's Governmental Affairs Office in Washington, D.C. Students Gabe Bocchino and Chris Brown also were honored at the event for their successful participation in ICC's High School Technical Training Program (HSTTP).

As Assistant Building Official, Carver became a driving force in the development of a green construction option for the city of Maplewood. The process began about four years ago when the city council approved an exploratory program.

"Nick and others involved in the green building ordinance development reached consensus that the code would be an asset for the city's economic future," explained ICC Board of Directors President Guy Tomberlin, CBO, as he presented the award. "After years of meetings, the city council unanimously adopted the Maplewood Green Building Program Ordinance on Sept. 23, 2013."

Carver has served in Minnesota for more than 30 years, including with Maplewood's Building Inspections Division since 1987. He was a member of the 2012 and 2015 International Green Construction Code (IgCC) Code Development Committees, the IgCC Public Version 2 Committee, the ICC Green Building Exam Development Committee, and as Chair of the Region III Code Development Committee.

Soon after the green ordinance adoption in Maplewood, Carver was named Building Official for the city, and recently added the title of Interim Director of the Environment and Economic Development Department. He has served on the Board of Directors for the 10,000 Lakes Chapter of ICC for several years, and was the recipient of the Chapter's 2013 Code Development Committee Award and 2012 Bullspitter Award for excellence in "code speak." He also was the recipient of the 2012 Excellence in Education Award presented by the Association of Minnesota Building Officials.

Bocchino and Brown were recognized for their accomplishments through the HSTTP.

Bocchino graduated from Harford Technical High School in Harford County, Md., this month. He has been accepted at Pennsylvania College of Technology, the first college to start the ICC's Certificate of Achievement program. He is working on obtaining scholarships to attend the college. Bocchino had a perfect attendance record and a 4.0 GPA at Harford Tech and thus received the Baltimore Building Congress's Future Craftsman of the Year Award.

Brown, who graduated from Harford Tech last year with a 3.7 GPA, is a member of the National Technical Honor Society, has received ICC's Certificates of Achievement in all four disciplines (building, electrical, plumbing and HVAC), and is the recipient of a scholarship from the Maryland Building Officials Association given to students participating in the HSTTP. Brown is currently attending Morgan University majoring in architecture.
