The Code Council Board of Directors approved the establishment of an ad hoc committee for tall wood buildings at its December meeting. Tall wood is a term used by the industry to identify wood construction which utilizes Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) in buildings of heights greater than 6 stories. CLT buildings with heights varying from seven to 12 stories are in the planning stages in Portland, New York City and Minneapolis.

The purpose of the ad hoc committee is to explore the building science of tall wood buildings based on the following parameters:

  • The scope is to investigate the feasibility of and take action on developing code changes for tall wood buildings.
  • The ad hoc committee will follow the established procedures in Council Policy 7 Committees and Members and will be funded by the Code Council.
  • ICC will be responsible for funding meeting costs and reimbursement of eligible expenses for ad hoc committee members who are ICC Governmental Member Representatives.
  • ICC will investigate possible partnerships in this effort.
  • The Board appointed ad hoc committee will include the necessary balance of stakeholders, with additional opportunities for interested parties to participate in Work Groups.
  • The effort will continue through the 2018/2019/2020 Cycle.
The next step will be the posting of a Call for Committee for a broad-based consensus committee prior Jan. 1, 2016.
