Members of the committee working to complete the collaboration of the International Green Construction Code (IgCC), Standard 189.1 and LEED were recognized by ASHRAE President Tom Phoenix at the Society's 2015 Winter Conference in Chicago. International Code Council Senior Vice President of Technical Services Tom Frost served on the committee.

ICC, ASHRAE, the American Institute of Architects (AIA), the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) and the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) signed an agreement in August to collaborate on the development of the 2018 IgCC, Standard 189.1 and the LEED green building program. AIA, ASHRAE, IES and USGBC were cooperating sponsors of the development of the IgCC.

"In just a few years, we progressed from developing the first model code for green buildings to a new cooperative document that will make it easier for code officials, designers and builders to create sustainable buildings," said ICC Chief Executive Officer Dominic Sims, CBO. "Thank you to our cooperating sponsors, ICC Members and all who participate in the development of the International Green Construction Code for their support."

Phoenix provided an update on the project during his State-of-the-Society address at the President's Luncheon with some 500 people in attendance. "We are working to align new versions of Standard 189.1 — the Standard for the Design of High-Performance Green Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings — and the IgCC into one regulatory tool," he said. "This agreement also seeks to align the LEED program with the new code to ensure a streamlined, effective set of regulatory and above-code options for jurisdictions across the country."

Standard 189.1 will continue to be produced as an ANSI consensus standard and then delivered to ICC to wrap in to its code-compliance frame and position it for adoption as a building code, Phoenix said. Standard 189.1 will provide the entire technical content of the IgCC. A new standard will be produced every three years to complement the three-year code cycle.

"The integration of these documents will bring greater consistency to green building codes/standards," Phoenix said. "Having code officials working in partnership with design engineers and other technical experts will create a standard/code that is more likely to be adopted and more likely to be enforced... [and] make buildings more sustainable."

Members of the transition committee recognized for their hard work over the last several months included Sims, Frost, ICC General Counsel Mel Oncu, AIA Managing Director Policy & Community Relations Jessyca Henderson, AIA Codes & Standards Consultant Dave Collins, USGBC Vice President LEED Technical Development Brendan Owens, IES Director of Technology Rita Harrold, ASHRAE Treasurer Tim Wentz, ASHRAE Presidential Member Ron Jarnagin, ASHRAE Chair SSPC 189.1 Andy Persily, ASHRAE Executive Vice President Jeff Littleton and ASHRAE Director of Technology Claire Ramspeck.
